2009-2010 New Mexico State Season Preview
New Mexico State was a young, inexperienced team last season but still managed to tie for third in the conference.
The Aggies are still young in 2009-10, but now they are experienced – and very dangerous.
They return everyone from a team that went 17-15 last season, including Jahmar Young, the conference’s leading scorer and first-team All-WAC selection. Young is the first of four NMSU returners who averaged 12.1 points per game or better last season.
Jonathan Gibson, the lone senior of the bunch, is a stellar shooting guard who teamed with Young to connect on 134 of their 332 3-point attempts (40.4 percent). Sophomore forward Troy Gillenwater came off the bench last season to average 12.1 points and shoot better than 50 percent.
Not only do the Aggies bring back the league’s leading scorer in Young, they return the WAC’s leading rebounder in Wendell McKines. The 6-6 junior forward, who is academically ineligible for the first semester, averaged a double-double last season with 10 boards and 12.1 points a night.
NMSU’s offense could become even more potent as big man Hamidu Rahman continues to mature. The 6-11, 245-pounder averaged 6.8 points and finished seventh in the conference with 44 blocked shots.
The Aggies also welcome back point guard Hernst Laroche, who owned the second best assist-to-turnover ratio in the league. The Aggies were an offensive force, leading the conference with a whopping 76.3 points per night, but also were prone to defensive lapses. Opponents averaged 74.4 points per game, and that lack of defense left a mark as NMSU lost seven games in which they scored 70 points or more.
Third-year coach Marvin Menzies hopes that a maturing team, coupled with the addition of several athletic freshmen, will make a difference in the defense department.
