2009-2010 New Mexico Season Preview
Introducing the poster children for 20-plus wins without an NCAA bid: The New Mexico Lobos.
A 24-8 record turned into a one-and-done NIT run in ’07 on what was largely a one-man show starring J.R. Giddens.
A year later, New Mexico won three tight ones down the stretch to pull in a share of the Mountain West title with BYU and Utah at 14-4. It was the Lobos’ first conference title in 15 years, but they lost all tiebreakers to fall to the dreaded No.3 seed in the Mountain West Tournament, where the No.6 seed wins more often than not, and New Mexico was another jinx victim.
The NCAA bubble became the NIT, where New Mexico regrouped and grudgingly fell in the second round at Notre Dame.
But that three-senior lineup is gone, replaced by senior Roman Martinez, the lone carryover of the prior regime. The rest are Steve Alford’s players, led by junior point guard Dairese Gary. Freshmen, sophomores and one junior college transfer fill out the rest of the roster.
Naturally, the question is whether this much youth can ring up 20 wins again. In all likelihood, the answer is "yes." Sophomore guard Phillip McDonald is only the second UNM freshman with 33 starts in more than 20 years. Fellow sophomores Nate Garth and A.J. Hardeman played significant minutes and saw what it took to win in that stretch run.
The incoming class was ranked 18th by Rivals.com among mid-majors after the early signing period.
For all of Alford’s midwestern pedigree, New Mexico found a recruiting base in Houston. The main Houston connection, assistant coach Chris Walker, returned to his Villanova alma mater this summer.
The storied Pit is undergoing a $60 million makeover with most of the work targeted for completion before the season begins.
