The No. 21 Utah State Aggies, winners of 15 straight, are sitting comfortably atop the WAC standings, but are not likely let up when they face a resurrected Nevada Wolf Pack on Wednesday.
Utah State has lost no more than one consecutive game the entire season, losing to No. 9 Brigham Young and then a few game later to No. 14 Georgetown before going on an incredible run through the west. However, during the Aggies charge, several games could have gone either way including a double overtime game at Hawaii their last time out.
The Aggies leading scorer Tai Wesley (14.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists a game) was held to 12 points as Brian Green (11.8 points a game) led the Aggies with 22 points to prevent the upset and preserve the streak.
Meanwhile, Nevada has had some difficulties losing seven straight, two straight and three straight, before stringing together four straight wins — their longest of the season — coming into their midweek showdown with the Aggies. If the Wolf Pack are able to get out to a quick start, they may be able to pull off the upset in Logan.
This will be the second of two meetings this season, the first ending in an 81-67 win for Utah State in Reno. Wesley scored 21 points and the Aggies rallied from being down 49-39 with 13:54 with a 15-3 run to pull ahead en route to its 17th consecutive conference win.
Olek Czyz (13.4 points a game) led Nevada with 25 points and Malik Story (13.4 points a game) added 18 in the loss. Both will need to score a lot to win, as the Wolf Pack cannot give up 62-percent shooting again if they want to pull the upset.
Besides New Mexico, Nevada is one of the only other teams in the WAC who matches up well with Utah State. They should be able to challenge with four players averaging 13 or more points. The key will be whether they can do a better job defensively than the game in Reno.
