2010-2011 Nevada Season Preview

y ou might think second-year coach David Carter would be found wandering the back streets of Reno after losing Luke Babbitt and Armon Johnson to the NBA Draft. Both players had eligibility remaining, making the Wolf Pack a contender for the WAC title next spring had they remained on board. But instead of fixating on losing both All-WAC players to a higher power, Carter went out and did something about it with the top recruiting class in the WAC. That’s a good thing, because Carter welcomes back only one returning starter in junior forward Dario Hunt. Better known for his defensive prowess, Hunt averaged only 6.5 points a game last season, which gives you a good idea what Carter faces if he wants to remain among the WAC’s elite. Babbitt and Johnson accounted for 37.6 points and 12.3 rebounds a game, as well as 261 assists. Add in the departures of fellow starters Brandon Fields and Joey Shaw, and suddenly Nevada has lost nearly 84 percent of its scoring from a season ago. Not to fear, this is where the recruiting class steps in to save the day – or so Carter hopes. Carter is counting on freshman guard Deonte Burton and junior center Illiwa Baldwin to show the way. Burton was heavily recruited by UCLA after a stellar career at Compton High in Southern California, where he averaged 21 points, six rebounds and five assists as a senior. Baldwin played one year at Pratt Community College in Kansas, averaging 13.3 points and 10.7 rebounds. Carter also has a pair of transfers to turn to in sophomore guard Malik Story and sophomore forward Olek Czyz. Story comes by way of Indiana University, where he appeared in 31 games, starting three as a freshman. Story averaged a modest 5.9 points and 2.2 rebounds a game. He also managed 37 assists and 23 steals. He will ease the pain of Johnson’s departure. While Story can play right away, Czyz has to wait until midterm. He transferred from Duke last spring and was a Top-150 recruit coming out of Reno High School.
