2009-2010 Nevada Season Preview
Only seven players made Nevada’s summer trip to Europe following a rash of transfers and dismissals that made the first couple of months of new coach David Carter’s tenure something less than peaceful.
Carter took over for Mark Fox – who left for Georgia – but has been in the Wolf Pack program for 10 years. He inherits a team that hasn’t won the WAC in the past two years but has the personnel to challenge again this season with junior guard Armon Johnson and sophomore forward Luke Babbitt serving as a solid core.
The supporting cast is the issue heading into the season. Malik Cooke transferred and Ahyaro Phillips was kicked off the team following a weapons incident that also briefly entangled Johnson. Two players who signed with Fox also asked for their releases, and Carter had to grab a couple of late recruits to fill holes.
Babbitt and Johnson are as good a one-two punch as there is in the WAC – and perhaps the West – so as long as there is some support, Nevada will be fine.
That help could come from the freshman class. Carter has said Marko Cukic could see immediate time, and the athletic Devonte Elliott figures to be hard to keep off the court.
Dario Hunt is also a returning starter, a big man who helped keep the heat off Babbitt down low. Guard Brandon Fields likely will step into the starting lineup to replace Lyndale Burleson. Fields came off the bench in 32 games last year and can provide instant offense if called upon.
Nevada also has several bench players comfortable in that role, particularly forward Joey Shaw. The JC transfer by way of Indiana provided quality minutes for the Wolf Pack last season, averaging 7.4 points and four rebounds a game.
