2010-2011 Nebraska Season Preview
Things are looking up for Nebraska basketball away from the court. The Huskers are building a new practice facility, and last spring voters in Lincoln passed a bond issue to build a new arena that will open in 2013. Like everyone in Nebraska’s athletic department, coach Doc Sadler is looking forward to the team’s move to the Big Ten Conference in 2011. Tempering Sadler’s excitement is the fact that the Huskers have to make one more go-round in the Big 12. Sadler’s main concern heading into his fifth year at Nebraska is getting the Huskers back on track after last season’s slip. The signs of improvement Nebraska had shown in Sadler’s first three seasons were lost in the haze of a last place Big 12 finish. In spite of last season’s struggles, Sadler is convinced better days are ahead.

Nebraska Backcourt
Nebraska returns a full-time starter in Lance Jeter at the point, while Brandon Richardson is back after starting 15 games last season. So is Toney McCray, who was penciled in to start before an elbow injury ended his season after three games. Jeter, a former football player, is a hard-nosed performer who showed flashes in his first year in the program. McCray gives the Huskers a bigbody guard needed to compete in the Big 12. Eshaunte Jones gives Nebraska a perimeter threat, having made 43.5 percent of his 3-point shots. Ray Gallegos, who intended to transfer but decided to stay, provides backcourt depth. Sadler also believes Kamyron Brown, a transfer from Oregon, has a chance to contribute, as does junior college All-American Caleb Walker.
Nebraska Frontcourt
The Huskers need to beef up their inside attack, and Sadler believes junior college transfer Andre Almeida might be the guy to do it. The 6-11, 315-pounder should keep opponents from overpowering the Huskers in the middle, something that happened far too many times last season. Jorge Brian Diaz started 26 games last season and is Nebraska’s second-leading returning scorer. Christian Standhardinger attracted a lot of hype but had difficulty playing with the intensity that Sadler demands all of the time. Brandon Ubel probably would have benefited from a redshirt season, but he was forced into action when Christopher Niemann was sidelined after suffering his second knee injury before the season. NCAA rules kept Niemann from playing in 2008-09, and now he must shake off the additional rust accumulated during a medical redshirt season.
2010-2011 Nebraska Predictions
At some schools, Sadler might be on thin ice after a last-place finish in his fourth season. Instead, barring a total meltdown, it appears he’ll be around to take Nebraska into the Big Ten. He’d like to see the Huskers make that transition easier by making some much-needed strides this season.
