2010-2011 Missouri Season Preview
Missouri basketball fans have plenty of reason to feel optimistic heading into the 2010-11 season. The Tigers return four of their top five scorers. Two TOP-50 prospects headline a recruiting class that ranked in the Top 10 nationally. Two straight NCAA Tournament appearances provide confidence and momentum. Missouri’s success the past two seasons is a result of mastering the demanding style of coach Mike Anderson That won’t change this season, despite the loss of two of the Tigers’ most active defenders. Gone is J.T. Tiller, a two-time Big 12 Defender of the Year, as well as Zaire Taylor.

Missouri Backcourt
Filling the holes left by the departure of Tiller and Taylor will be critical for the Tigers. Anderson said there’s nothing wrong with the offensive skills of Missouri’s top returning backcourt players, but he does want them to develop a stronger defensive mindset. Leading scorer Kim English and top reserve Marcus Denmon, who shot 41 percent from beyond the arc, provide Missouri with plenty of backcourt firepower. English needs to cut down on his turnovers – he had 71 last season – but he’s made big strides in expanding his offensive game. Returning squad members Michael Dixon Jr. and Jarrett Sutton are candidates for more playing time.
Missouri Frontcourt
Big men DeMarre Carroll and Leo Lyons fueled Missouri’s run to the Elite Eight in 2009. The Tigers never got over their departures last season, and a lack of inside depth became critical when 6-9 Justin Safford went down late in the season with a knee injury. Safford, the Tigers’ lone senior this season, underwent offseason surgery and is expected to be ready when Missouri opens preseason practice. Safford, if healthy, and Laurence Bowers, an active post man on both ends of the court, will be counted on heavily to carry the inside attack Anderson is hoping for greater contributions from 6-9, 270-pound Steve Moore, as well as John Underwood. Some immediate help from newcomers Kadeem Green, and Tony Mitchell wouldn’t hurt either. Mitchell, a Top-20 recruit, spent the summer playing with the U.S. under-18 national team. As a high school senior, he averaged 20.5 points, 13.2 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game while being named the Player of the Year in Dallas. His eligibility, however, remained in question late into the summer.
2010-2011 Missouri Predictions
Anderson’s challenge this season is to keep the Tigers from taking a step backward. That won’t be easy given the expected strength of the Big 12 and the Tigers’ personnel losses.
In the three seasons before Anderson became coach, Missouri won 44 games. The Tigers’ 54 wins the past two seasons indicate a dramatic turnaround in Columbia. But there’s more to accomplish. Missouri Finish in the Big 12: 5th
