2010-2011 Michigan State Season Preview
Michigan State’s road to success has reached the desired destination in each of the past two years. But twice now, the season didn’t finish as Tom Izzo’s players had hoped, only deepening the Spartans’ championship hunger pangs. And after electing to stay put rather than venture into the NBA, Izzo believes he’s got Michigan State on track for another run at a national title. How that plays out after many of the Spartans spent the summer on the mend, though, remains in question.

Michigan State Backcourt
Kalin Lucas headlined Michigan State’s walking wounded, spending six months recovering from a torn Achilles. While the Spartans’ leading scorer expects to be ready by season’s start, missing so much time in the offseason might taka its toll, especially early on as Lucas adjusts to life back in live game action. Chris Alen went into the summer in flux and didn’t make it out as Izzo said he would decide by the time school started if Allen would rejoin the team, but didn’t even need that long, announcing the decision in early August. His loss is not unimportant, but the Spartans still have plenty of talent, with Durrell Summers also back and, if anything, Allen’s booting is probably a sign that Keith Appling will see substantial minutes from the jump. Michigan’s Mr. Basketball last year had offers from North Carolina, Georgetown, Syracuse and Memphis, so yeah, he’s pretty good.
Michigan State Frontcourt
Injuries have kept Delvon Roe from showing the potential Izzo saw when he recruited him. But after he bounced back from a meniscus injury that sidetracked him late last season, the Spartans are counting on the talented junior to spark the frontcourt. Roe and Draymond Green will combine to fill the void – both in scoring and on defense -left by Raymar Morgan’s graduation. With Green more mature and in the best shape’ of his life and Roe the healthiest he’s been, Michigan State should have a solid foundation in the post. Green will unquestionably be the Spartans’ leader, continuing a long line of captains who have not only set the example, but carried teammates. The Spartans have some depth with sophomore center Derrick Nix and freshman forward Russell Byrd. But like many of his teammates, Byrd missed a significant chunk of the summer and will have to play catch-up in September.
2010-2011 Michigan State Predictions
How the Spartans respond to all the offseason injuries while preparing for a brutal nonconference slate could go a long way in determining their success. Izzo is confident his bunch can be very good, but for a program that’s made six Final Four appearances in 12 years, very good’s not enough. But if everything falls into place the way Izzo feels it could for his team and if the Spartans can remain healthy through their nonconference gauntlet and in what should be a balanced Big Ten, don’t be surprised if the Spartans make another championship surge. Michigan State Finish in the Big Ten: 1st
