2010-2011 Miami Season Preview
After finishing last in the ACC in 2009-10, Miami is going to be better this season – and that’s not a backhanded compliment. We know the temptation is to read that first sentence and to think, “Better? Well, duh. How could Miami possibly be worse?” That’s not a bad point, but it’s not the point here. Miami will be better – because Miami’s best players will get more minutes this season. Durand Scott will be the busiest guard now that James Dews is gone. Reggie Johnson will be the busiest big man now that Dwayne Collins is gone. Malcolm Grant will get more playing time for his sweet-shooting stroke. Adrian Thomas deserves more touches for his, as welL And two freshmen wings, Erik Swoope and Rion Brown, could be sensational. Better Miami? Count on that.

Miami Backcourt
Scott will be one of the best players in the ACC this season. Before he’s done in three years, he will be one of the best players in the country. He’s that good, and as last season rolled on, he wrested control of the team from Dews and Collins and made Miami his team. And the Hurricanes responded by playing their best ball in the ACC Tournament, upsetting Wake Forest and Virginia Tech before losing to eventual national champion Duke by just three points. Scott made that happen, and with the veteran Grant and the newcomer Brown, he will be flanked this season by two exceptional shooters. Grant has shot 43 percent from 3-point range the past two seasons. Garrius Adams gives the Canes size at the fourth guard.
Miami Frontcourt
Even though Miami lost two big men who made 48 combined starts a year ago including Collins as an NBA Draft pick – the Canes will be loaded up front. Johnson was dominant down the stretch, averaging 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 63 percent from the floor in the last four games. Julian Gamble also played his best ball late in the season, averaging seven pomts and seven rebounds in the final month after becoming a starter. Adrian Thomas shot 42.1 percent on 3-pointers, DeQuan Jones is a (way) above-therim finisher and Donnavan Kirk removes his redshirt – and still the Canes will have to find frontcourt minutes for Swoope, who is one of the more fascinating freshman in the ACC.
2010-2011 Miami Predictions
Miami is not a team without holes. The Canes lack a pure point guard, although Scott and Grant are serviceable. Two of Miami’s five or six most important players this season are freshmen, which means anything could happen there. Those are issues. But Scott is a star in the making, and Johnson could be one as well. Against Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament, the enormous center had 22 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the floor, and for the season he hit 78.5 percent of his free throws. This is not your normal 300-pound center. And this is not your 2010-11 ACC cellardwelling team. Miami Finish in the ACC: 8th
