Maryland Preview Picks, & Odds.

Maryland 2009-2010 Record: 24-9 overall; 13-3 ACC (Tie/1st)

Maryland Coach: Gary Williams – At Maryland: 428-233, 21 years; overall: 649-366, 32 years

Maryland Players to Watch: Sean Mosley is poised to put together a huge season and could be Maryland’s go-to guy. Expect Jordan Williams to average a double double.

Maryland Key Losses: Landon Milbourne (12.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg); Greivis Vasquez (19.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg); Eric Hayes (11.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg)

2010-2011 Maryland Season Preview

Having the ACC’s best and most experienced backcourt – NBA first-round pick Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes – spoiled Maryland coach Gary Williams. The duo led the Terrapins’ resurgence, culminating with back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances the past two seasons. Another significant loss was two-time double digit scorer, forward Landon Milbourne.

Maryland Backcourt

Sean Mosley has worked diligently to become an all-around player. The hard-nosed junior guard can defend and score well, is a crafty passer and brings a lot of intensity. Mosley also added a better outside shot last season and grabbed more than 100 rebounds. It will be Adrian Bowie’s team to run and lead, and he’s more than capable with an excellent combination of quickness, toughness and brashness. He will need to assume more of a point guard mentality with the departure of Vasquez and Hayes. Williams hopes Bowie can playas well as he did as a sophomore, when he started 28 games and averaged nine points. Bowie worked as a top reserve last year with Vasquez, Hayes and Mosley forming a formidable starting trio. Cliff Tucker is an explosive, athletic wing player who must become more consistent. Two freshmen, combo guard Pe’Shon Howard and floor leader Terrell Stoglin, figure to crack Williams’ rotation.

Maryland Frontcourt

Jordan Williams returns as the Terrapins’ top inside player. He’s an excellent rebounder and defender who provided Maryland with the rugged post presence it lacked during the 2008-09 season. Coach Williams will look to the 6-10, 260pound sophomore center for even more scoring and rebounding. He averaged 9.6 points and 8.6 rebounds last year. After having to sit out the first eight games last year for breaking an unspecified team rule, Dino Gregory showed considerable growth and evolved into a solid defender and shot blocker.

2010-2011 Maryland Predictions

Not having Vasquez – the reigning ACC Player of the Year – and Hayes should allow Mosley, Tucker and Bowie to flourish. Williams just needs the trio to be more consistent. Gregory and a few of the freshmen must also come through. If everything meshes, the Terrapins merit watching in the ACC, but likely won’t crack the upper echelon.
