2009-2010 Maryland Season Preview

Greivis Vasquez heard the words ‘second-round pick’ way too many times. Vasquez applied for early entry to the NBA, but withdrew his name from the draft when it looked like he wouldn’t be selected in the first round.

Vasquez, a 6-6 guard, became only the sixth player in ACC history to lead his team in scoring, rebounding and assists in a season. His return likely means another NCAA Tournament appearance for the Terps, who are bringing back eight of their top nine players from a team that lost in the second round to Memphis.

On top of that, two front court recruits – 6-9 Jordan Williams and 6-8 James Padgett – give the Terrapins some much-needed size. They’ll help make up for the graduation of forward Dave Neal.

Maryland Backcourt

The Terps are as well-stocked at guard as any team in the ACC, and Williams is excited to welcome back the entire backcourt.

Vasquez played more under control last year, silencing his critics with his improved shot selection and by committing fewer turnovers.

Adrian Bowie, the team’s shortest player at 6-2, is a jet who got to the free-throw line more than anybody other than Vasquez. Sophomore Sean Mosley stepped in for two year starter Eric Hayes in late January and provided excellent rebounding and defense.

Hayes played better coming off the bench and finished third on the team in scoring.

Junior Cliff Tucker is a strong 6-6 swingman who started five games last year.

Maryland Frontcourt

The Terrapins lacked a true center or power forward who could play extended minutes a year ago. But Jordan Williams, a center who weighs 245 pounds, could fill the gaping hole. Rivals.com ranked him as the nation’s 85th best high school player.

Senior Landon Milbourne played as a swingman during his first two seasons, but Williams asked him to move into in the post last year and he usually held his own against bigger and taller opponents. He ranked second on the Terps in rebounding and third in scoring. Junior forward Dino Gregory should see more playing time after showing more toughness as a sophomore.

Padgett possesses the strength and rebounding ability to blossom into a good prospect. He’ll vie for playing time at power forward.

Senior Jerome Burney needs to stay injury-free to crack the rotation. The foot problems that plagued him during his freshman year flared up again last year.

2009-2010 Maryland Predictions

Gary Williams has Maryland surging. With Vasquez back and a slew of others, the Terps will contend for a top-four spot in the ACC. This isn’t vintage Maryland -like the teams that challenged for (and won) national titles in the early part of the decade – but after a period of stagnation, it appears as though things are just fine in College Park.
