2009-2010 Marshall Season Preview
The Thundering Herd will retire Mike D’Antoni’s number during the season, but fans can also focus on what’s happening with the program and look forward with anticipation.
Marshall fought injuries last year to find a spot in the middle of the conference, and it should take another step ahead this season. By the time this young group matures, the Herd could be something special.
There aren’t too many all-stars among the returnees – all six of them – but each has the potential to make strong contributions and team with an A-list crop of newcomers to make Marshall tough once coach Donnie Jones figures out how to use everybody.
Take 3-point shooting. Last year, it was pretty much Chris Lutz, who lived up to his advance billing by hitting 37.4 percent of his attempts from behind the arc. This season, opponents must worry about him, Cam Miller – a 6-8 sniper transfer from Western Carolina – and Dago Pena, who is now clear of the separated shoulder that dogged him last year.
Inside, the Herd can rely on 6-8, 240-pound senior Tyler Wilkerson – who has recovered from a broken jaw suffered against Tulsa – 6-11 freshman pogo stick Hassan Whiteside and 6-6 Tirrell Baines, who pulled down 4.9 rebounds per game last year. Redshirt freshman Nigel Spikes isn’t too polished, but at 6-10 and 230 pounds is capable of banging inside.
On the wings, high-scoring DeAndre Kane, who comes to Marshall after a year of prep school, averaged 33.1 points per game on a state title team as a high school senior, and Antonio Haymon scored 1,100 points in just two JC seasons. Expect point guards Damier Pitts, Shaquille Johnson and Darryl Merthie to keep everybody well-fed while hitting double figures from time-to-time.
The Thundering Herd should be a versatile, exciting team … the kind that could make D’Antoni proud to be a Marshall graduate.
