2009-2010 LSU Season Preview

Ask Trent Johnson about the prospects for LSU, and you might expect a grimace – at least compared to last season.

The second-year coach is coming off a Southeastern Conference crown earned in cruise control, a run that began when he was handed stars like Marcus Thornton (21 points per game), Garrett Temple (3.8 assists) and Chris Johnson (2.7 blocks). They’re all gone now.

All that leaves the Tigers with is All-American wing Tasmin Mitchell, up-and-coming guard Bo Spencer, and several moving parts. And when Johnson runs down the roster, injuries pop up more than experience.

LSU Backcourt

When the Tigers needed points last season, Thornton would rise to the occasion.

The player getting him the ball was often Temple, also a tenacious defender. Yet the catch-and-shoot specialist went 43rd overall in the NBA Draft, and the playmaker is also battling in the pros.

That leaves Spencer in the spotlight. It’s not that simple, though.

The point guard averaged 11.4 points and 2.6 assists, and then had offseason surgery on his shooting wrist. That may hurt his progress on improving his mid-range game. Suddenly, he’s no longer a given.

Healthy or not, Spencer may not be able to make-up for the loss of last year’s talent, a list that also includes 3-point shooter Terry Martin. The onus falls on untested sophomore Chris Bass, little-used senior Alex Farrer, and touted recruit Aaron Dotson, who is hoping to relocate his explosiveness after a knee surgery.

LSU Frontcourt

Mitchell played power forward last year instead of his natural small forward, and he was still a star. This season, with the shot-blocking Johnson and sturdy Quintin Thornton gone, Mitchell may move off the block, if only to guard the opposing wing. That may hun LSU’s post defense.

An All-SEC pick, Mitchell has no peers. He’ll need help. Two players who could supply it are both coming off injuries. Gritty Storm Warren was threatening to shine last season, and he could do so again if he stays healthy. Garrett Green sat out last season after back surgery, and while he may be rusty, he has potential.

Dennis Harris (6-10) and signee Eddie Ludwig add depth.

2009-2010 LSU Predictions

When Johnson arrived from Stanford, he inherited an experienced, skilled group that won an SEC title. It’s just the opposite this season. Mitchell and the healing Spencer can play, but questions abound. If Mitchell is going to put the team on his back, it may be OK. But with a tough non conference schedule and a team of green players, the water figures to be rough, especially early.

The key for Johnson and LSU is to put away any thoughts of last year’s championship and focus on rebuilding. The wins may not come as quickly but the improvement must be evident, regardless. LSU Finish in the SEC: 6th in West Division
