2009-2010 Louisiana Tech Season Preview
The Bulldogs are one of the best defensive teams in the WAC, and those numbers aren’t too shabby when put up against some of the better teams in the country, either. The problem in Ruston, however, is that no one can score enough points for Tech to win consistently.
The Bulldogs held six conference opponents to 60 points or less last season, but Tech lost five of those games – including two to eventual league champ Utah State – as the Bulldogs could muster an average of just 49.2 points in the five losses.
Most of those defenders are back, and fortunately so is leading scorer Kyle Gibson, but he’ll need some help on a team that hasn’t finished above the .500 mark since the 2005-06 season.
Gibson had an outstanding first year in Ruston as a junior college transfer, averaging 16.1 points to finish sixth in the conference while earning selection to the All-WAC second team. Gibson got some help from Magnum Rolle, Tech’s leading rebounder, and Jamel Guyton. They averaged 12.2 and 11.8 points per game, respectively.
Both are back, but there is a significant scoring drop after the three at the top of the stat sheet. Tops among the remaining six returning letter winners, guard Glu Ashaolu averaged just 5.3 points per night.
Second-year coach Kerry Rupp believes help is on the way. The addition of talented freshmen, all of whom will compete for time, and junior college transfer point guard DeAndre Brown, brings scorers to a roster badly in need of them. Brown also should help Tech cut down on last season’s average of 15.3 turnovers per game.
Brown averaged 17.5 ppg for Navarro (Texas) JC last season. Fellow guard Jarvis Davis averaged 19.5 ppg as a high schooler in Charleston, S.C.
