2010-2011 Kansas State Season Preview

What do you get when you combine a first trip to the Elite Eight in 22 years with the return of many key contributors to that run? The answer, if you’re Kansas State, is preseason expectations that are through the roof. The Wildcats won a school-record 29 games last season in making the Regional Finals before losing to eventual national runner-up Butler. Kansas State does lose two key starters off that club in addition to a third that averaged less than three points a game, but there’s enough talent returning along with the addition of another potentially strong recruiting class to leave Wildcat supporters believing even bigger things are afoot. Kansas State will likely find itself in everyone’s Top 10. Learning to live with that, is part of the challenge.

Kansas State Backcourt

The Wildcats lose point guard Denis Clemente, who not only ran the offense, but was a 3-point threat who could take over games. Replacing him is priority NO.1, and Jacob Pullen figures to be the leading candidate. Pullen, honorable mention on the Associated Press All-America Team and a first-team Big 12 pick, led the Wildcats in scoring 19 times last season. Two of his most memorable games came in the NCAA Tournament, when he scored 34 points in a second-round win over Brigham Young and then dropped 28 on Xavier in the Sweet 16. Rodney McGruder, a key sub as a freshman, could shoulder some of that load if he improves defensively.

Kansas State Frontcourt

Kansas State likely will need a more consistent inside threat than it had last season, when the Wildcats could lean heavily on Clemente and Pullen to pull them out of tight spots. It took Connecticut transfer Curtis Kelly some time to get going, but he played big throughout the second half of the season. Wally Judge also struggled early but came on late in the season, while Jamar Samuels was the Big 12′s top sixth man. Dominique Sutton’s decision to transfer leaves an unexpected hole, as the Wildcats will lose a relentless defender, who averaged 7.2 points per game. Also gone is Luis Colon, who started 24 games, but averaged just 2.9 points. The Wildcats could get a lift from Freddy Asprilla, a 6-10 transfer from Florida International who was the Sun Belt’s Freshman of the Year in 2009, averaging 13.7 points per game.

2010-2011 Kansas State Predictions

Martin had his critics when he took over for Bob Huggins, but his work over the past three seasons indicates Kansas State picked the right man. Martin helped Kansas State reconnect with its past in getting the Wildcats a win shy of a Final Four appearance. Given the talent Martin has assembled, Kansas State’s future looks pretty bright, too.
