2010-2011 Kansas Season Preview
The loss of three key players, including two underclassmen, to the NBA might send many college basketball programs into a tailspin. At Kansas, it’s just a changing of the guard. While acknowledging that his 2010-11 team has its share of questions, Jayhawks coach Bill Self is bullish on its potential. Sherron Collins, Xavier Henry and Cole Aldrich were the leaders last year on a team that went 33-3, but saw its bid for a national championship end when Northern Iowa pulled off a memorable second-round upset. Aldrich and Henry opted to leave early for professional careers. Kansas returns 14 lettermen, including starters Marcus Morris and Tyshawn Taylor. The Jayhawks expect freshman Josh Selby, among the nation’s top recruits, to take over for Collins at the point.

Kansas Backcourt
Kansas hardly lacks experience at the guard spots, and Selby’s arrival only adds to the depth of the Jayhawks’ talent. Quick, athletic and a scorer from anywhere on the court, Selby is capable of being a difference-maker despite his youth. Taylor will play a more prominent role, but needs to show greater maturity than last season, when he groused about his role. He remains one of the league’s more gifted perimeter players, and even with Selby around, figures to have the ball in his hands more this season. Brady Morningstar and Tyrel Reed will get chances to make greater contributions, as will Elijah Johnson, who showed promise as a freshman The Jayhawks also add Royce Woolridge, son of former NBA star Orlando Woolridge. A dynamic scorer in high school, Woolridge might be headed for a redshirt season given Kansas’ depth at the guard spots.
Kansas Frontcourt
Marcus Morris was considered one of the most improved players in the country last season when he averaged 12.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. In conference play, the 6-8 Morris averaged 14.2 points and 7.3 rebounds. He’ll team with twin brother Markieff to give the Jayhawks one of the league’s more formidable inside attacks. Both are capable of stretching defenses with their mid-range and outside shooting skills, but their ability to dominate inside is their real value. Small forwards Travis Releford and Mario Little each redshirted last season, and both should be ready to assume greater roles. Thomas Robinson gained valuable experience in a limited role last season, while Jeff Withey, a 7-footer, adds capable depth.
2010-2011 Kansas Predictions
The loss to mid-major Northern Iowa in the tournament soured an otherwise sterling season for the J ayhawks, who won their sixth consecutive Big 12 title. They lost just twice during the regular season, but exited the postseason on the first weekend for the third time in Self’s seven seasons. The loss of players the caliber of Collins, Aldrich and Henry isn’t easy to overcome, but the Jayhawk fans should be confident.
