2010-2011 Iowa Season Preview

Look at the remnants of the struggling Iowa program Fran McCaffery inherited, and it’s easy to see how daunting a challenge he faces. There’s a lack of depth, a depleted scoring attack and a losing culture that’s become a staple around the Hawkeyes in recent years. The one thing McCaffery didn’t find lacking was enthusiasm – the key component he needed to quickly put his stamp on an Iowa program that hasn’t made an NCAA Tournament appearance in four years.

Iowa Backcourt

Point guard Cully Payne might be the biggest benefactor of McCaffery’s uptempo style. After starting 32 games as a freshman, Payne will be turned loose, given the chance to orchestrate an offense that will attack much more. Payne offers the perfect skill set to run the new style, opening the door to more production from others. Matt Gatens has to fill the same role as his teammates develop. Gatens led the Hawkeyes in scoring 12 times, but won’t have the same dependable cast around him after scorers Aaron Fuller and Anthony Tucker left the program. Sophomore Eric May also should flourish in an offense in which he will no longer be hindered by Iowa’s conservative approach. His ability to attack the rim should free him up to contribute much more than he did as a freshman. Bryce Cartwright lends some versatility after playing at the junior college level last season. Cartwright, who started 20 games at Fresno State two years ago, gives Iowa another option at point guard and could lend some defensive help at the point along with solid scoring skills.

Iowa Frontcourt

Jarryd Cole will anchor Iowa’s post presence and should be able to establish himself with his teammates again playing the way they’re accustomed. Cole’s scoring and rebounding numbers will have to pick up, but he, along with underrated Andrew Brommer, could change the way teams defend Iowa in the post. At 6-9, Brommer has the size to complement Cole while providing some experience that is otherwise lacking on Iowa’s roster. But because of Iowa’s low numbers, McCaffery’s incoming freshmen, along with junior college transfer Devon Archie, will have to find a way to fit in sooner rather than later. Devyn Marble – the son of Iowa all-time leading scorer Roy Marble – gives the Hawkeyes some versatility and the ability to score around the rim or from the outside. Fellow freshman Zach McCabe also lends an inside-out game that should fit nicely into McCaffery’s system, while power forward Melsahn Basabe will add depth down low, along with Cole and Brommer.

2010-2011 Iowa Predictions

The Hawkeyes have a lot of solid building blocks, but don’t expect everything to come together in a hurry. As good as returners are, McCaffery’s incoming crop of youngsters will need plenty of time to adjust – not so much to a new philosophy, but to a Big Ten landscape that has plenty of experienced performers. The future might be brighter than it has been in recent years, but there are too many pieces to fit together for the Hawkeyes to reasonably expect to make any kind of a run at an NCAA Tournament appearance. Iowa Finish in the Big Ten: 11th
