Indiana Preview Picks, & Odds.

Indiana 2009-2010 Record: 10-21 overall; 4-14 Big Ten (Tie/9th)

Indiana Coach: Tom Crean – At Indiana: 16-46, 2years; overall: 206-142, 11 years

Indiana Players to Watch: Maurice Creek, if healthy, could contribute enough to become an all-conference performer.

Indiana Key Losses: Devan Dumes, F, 6-2, 192, (6.6 ppg, 2.0 rpg); Tijan Jobe, C, 7-0, 250. (0.4 ppg, 0.6 rpg)

2010-2011 Indiana Season Preview

The strides Tom Crean hoped to see his team make last season were still measured in small steps. The Hoosiers jumped from registering one Big Ten victory to four while improving their overall win total from six to 10. But the once-proud program still has plenty to accomplish before the Hoosiers are ready to display the brand of competitive toughness Crean’s teams have been known for in the past.

Indiana Backcourt

As big of an impact as Maurice Creek made in limited time as a freshman, the Hoosiers expect even more from their leading scorer. Before suffering a knee fracture in December, Creek showed a propensity for scoring, combining with Matt Roth in what should again be a talented guard tandem. As formidable as Creek and Roth can be along with dependable double-digit scorer Verdell Jones, it’s a healthy Creek who will again take the lead role for Indiana. Indiana added some depth and top-notch shooting ability with freshmen Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey. At 6-4, the athletic Oladipo could see some time at shooting forward, and his perimeter range makes him a valuable newcomer. Sheehey, meanwhile, is also a capable scorer and, like Oladipo, gives the Hoosiers another pure shooter to go along with Roth.

Indiana Frontcourt

If Indiana hopes to take the next step in Crean’s plan, Christian Watford and Tom Pritchard must take leadership roles. Watford showed his scoring ability, but has to become more consistent, while Pritchard sets the tone for the physical play and aggression the Hoosiers lacked on a regular basis last season. Pritchard hit on 60.9 percent of his field goal attempts, but must look to score more to have the impact Indiana needs. Bobby Capobianco and Derek Elston both saw time in limited roles at forward and should continue to develop this season. Crean added some serious size in Guy-Marc Michel, who at 7-1,265 pounds, could in time become a legitimate center with impressive shot-blocking abilities. The junior college transfer will need time to build a Division I mentality. Crean expects to see more commitment to becoming bigger across the board, citing a lack of toughness – especially defensively as a major culprit in his team’s struggles.

2010-2011 Indiana Predictions

Indiana saw slight improvement in Crean’s second year but is still far from NCAA Tournament consideration. The Hoosiers haven’t yet found a way to meet Big Ten toughness standards, requiring Crean to remain patient as his team moves closer to where it wants to be. Expect Indiana to take another step, especially’behind its impressive stable of shooters, but give the Hoosiers another year before they resemble a team ready take a major leap forward.
