Illinois State Players to Watch: Jackie Carmichael showed outstanding potential as afreshman, but will have to step up his game with the departure of rugged Dinma Odiakosa. Establishing amore consistent approach could be akey to Carmichael’s continued development.

2010-2011 Illinois State Season Preview

Tim Jankovich’s fourth season at Illinois State will be his first without Osiris Eldridge and Dinma Odiakosa. How quickly Jankovich can find ways to replace the two standout players could determine whether this season will be one of reloading or rebuilding in NormaL Eldridge was an enigmatic talent, a spectacular scorer who often made poor decisions with shot selections. A three-time All-Valley selection, Eldridge finished fifth on Illinois State’s all-time scoring chart. He’s also the record-holder for 3-point field goals. Odiakosa’s steady development transformed him into one of the league’s most feared big men by the time his career ended. He led the league in rebounding and shooting last season. The additional loss of Lloyd Phillips, a two-year starter at point guard, leaves Illinois State’s streak of three consecutive 20-win seasons in jeopardy. Jankovich is confident he can pull off a quick retooling project and keep the Redbirds among the league’s elite teams. Jankovich does have some talent returning, headlined by Jackie Carmichael, an athletic big man coming off a solid freshman season. Starting guard Alex Rubin is a dependable defender who needs to improve offensively to help pick up the slack left by the departure of Eldridge and Phillips. Newcomer Kenyon Smith is penciled in to take over the point, and Justin Clark will get a chance to make greater contributions now that Eldridge is gone. Clark was considered a shooting star when he entered the program but never found his rhythm as a freshman. Austin Hill and Tony Lewis showed they were capable of turning in big games but lacked consistency in their first season in the program. Illinois State will need big contributions from the seven new players on the roster, including Smith and Fordham transfer Trey Blue. Blue, who has three seasons of eligibility remaining, averaged 8.2 points as a freshman.
