Idaho Players to Watch: Shawn Henderson has the potential and the opportunity to step into asignificant offensive role. With the team’s top scorers gone, the 6-3 guard can build on his strong finish to the 2009-10 season.

2010-2011 Idaho Season Preview

The Vandals began the 2009-10 season with a road win over Utah, then lost their next game to Texas Southern. UI defeated No. 25 Portland by 20 and were then blown out by the Pilots a few games later. That was Idaho in a nutshell last season inconsistent. The Vandals were coming off their first winning season in years, but the high expectations were quickly dashed by a slow nonconference performance and a 1-4 start to WAC play. For better or worse, the 2010-11 Vandals will look far different from last season’s version. UI will need to replace 75 percent of its scoring and 78 percent of its rebounding. Forward Luiz Toledo is the only returning starter and one of just four Vandals with any significant experience. Toledo’s 7-4 points per game last season is the highest average among UI’s returners. The 6-8 Brazilian will be more of a focal point of the offense, but he’s going to need help. Much of the offensive responsibility also will fall to Brandon Wiley, who missed almost the entire 2009-10 campaign. Wiley, listed at 6-6, will most likely play the three. The departure of Marvin Jefferson, UI’s leading rebounder and fourth-leading scorer, will leave opportunities in the post for Toledo and Kyle Barone, a 6-10 sophomore. Barone played in almost all of Idaho’s games but averaged just five points and 4.1 boards. He’s expected to win the starting center job, and the hope is that Barone’s soft touch and solid midrange game can flourish with increased minutes. Shawn Henderson came on strong at the end of last season and showed the ability to score at North Idaho College, where he averaged 17 per night. ur hopes increased minutes will bring back some of that offense. Fellow guard Jeff Ledbetter, used about as often as Henderson, also will play more. The rest of the roster is more of a question mark. Landon Tatum is the frontrunner to run the point, while the Vandals hope someone will emerge from a group of JC transfers that includes forward Renado Parker and guards Idell Bell and Deremy Geiger.
