Freshman Reggie Johnson had the game of his life as the Hurricanes pasted Wake Forest 83-62 on Thursday, hitting all eight of his field-goal attempts, and he went 6-of-6 at the foul line for a season-high 22 points. James Dews added 15 points for the Hurricanes, who shot 51.7% from the floor while holding the Demon Deacons to 35.1%, including 4-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Hurricanes took every good care of the ball with six turnovers, and they also took advantage of a Wake Forest team that went 18-of-28 at the charity stripe, even though the Hurricanes committed 22 fouls.
The Hokies stormed to a bye in the first round of the ACC tournament because of a solid ate stretch which saw them win seven of their last 10. Only a 20-point loss at Boston College during that stretch could be considered a bad loss, and that was sandwiched between a trip to Duke and a double-overtime loss to Maryland, the top two teams in the conference. The Hokies are powered offensively by Malcolm Devaney, but Virginia Tech will be hoping that Dorenzo Hudson can go after he missed the finale at Georgia Tech with a bruised foot. The Hokies are tough defensively, holding opponents to 39.5% from the floor, and that will be the key for them because offensively, it’s all Devaney.

The Hokies rolled to an 81-66 win at home on January 13th, while the Hurricanes returned the favor with an 82-75 victory in Miami on January 31st. Devaney went for 28 in the first game, but he was held to 16 points in the rematch, and the Hurricanes will try to keep him quiet again. The Hurricanes are also trying to do this without Dwayne Collins, their leading scorer who has a stress fracture in his leg. Collins is also their best rebounder and he can block shots, so the Hokies will look to attack the rim.
