2010-2011 Houston Season Preview
Houston athletic director Mack Rhoades made a five-year pledge to James Dickey, who hasn’t been a head coach since 2001. He has a lot to prove to Cougar fans who met the hiring of Dickey with lukewarm response at best, which is natural since he was coaching eighth graders last year while Tom Penders was leading the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament. Dickey was 164-123 at Texas Tech from 19912001, was an assistant at Oklahoma State from 2002-2008 and spent the past two years out of the college game, though he coached an eighth-grade team last season. It’s critical for Dickey to succeed where Houston has failed in recent decades, namely attracting top-tier athletes from the area. Last year, the Cougars played their way into their first NCAA Tournament since 1992, but the season was hardly deemed a success until the C-USA Tournament championship game and Penders’ departure was not widely lamented. Guards Aubrey Coleman – who led the nation in scoring – and Kelvin Lewis left the program after averaging more than 40 points per game combined. Despite having a roster loaded with athletic wing players, the Cougars simply won’t be able to replace the scoring, let alone leadership, they provided. But returning is sophomore Kendrick Washington, a 6-7, 270-pound forward who teams who with 6-9, 215-pound senior Maurice McNeil as the Cougars’ emphasis shifts from the backcourt to the frontcourt. But who’s going to run the show from the backcourt? A good bet is senior Zamal Nixon, who appeared in 31 garnes, although freshman Fabyon Harris comes in with a strong reputation as a playmaker. Another freshman who could make an impact is 6-7 Mikhail McLean who was recruited by a number of BCS schools. Because of a lack of experience in the backcourt, Dickey’s first team at Houston figures to struggle, but the signings of three Houston natives – McLean, Jonathon Simmons and Trumaine Johnson – is proof Dickey is already making Houston a priority in recruiting. If he can keep it up, the people who were so upset about Dickey’s hiring will begin to smile.
