2009-2010 Hawaii Season Preview

Bob Nash knows the third time had best be a charm as head coach of the Warriors or he’ll be out the door before the next national champion is crowned.

In the offseason, athletic director Jim Donovan gave Nash a couple of high notes and if he can hit at least one of them – he’ll get an extension. The first? Hawaii must win at least 18 games. The second? Any kind of postseason appearance will do the trick.

At first glance, that’s a pretty tall order for a coach who has only 24 victories in his first two seasons. But thanks to a schedule that’s loaded with Twinkie-filled goodness, Nash has a chance to keep his career alive in the island chain.

He’ll count on two transfers to make an immediate impact in the backcourt to complement top-notch forward Roderick Flemings and steady Bill Arnis – two of four returning starters. Nash cut loose four players, giving him room for Providence transfer Dwain Williams and junior college prospect Jeremy Lay.

The two 6-0 guards will have a few months to get acquainted with Nash’s system, then be ready to compete in a league where guards rule. Flemings and Amis did their best to lift the Rainbows’ spirits last year. Flemings was among the league’s leaders in scoring and Amis in rebounding.

But with no consistency from the perimeter, teams packed it in on Flemings and Amis, making it difficult to get things done. Flemings will play small forward and Amis will join fellow post players Petras Balocka, Paul Campbell and Brandon Adams in a rotation game in the paint.

Getting it together quickly will be the real challenge for Nash and his coaching staff. The pieces of the puzzle are there, but putting it together in a competitive league could prove difficult.
