2010-2011 Gonzaga Season Preview

Something’s gaining on the Bulldogs: the rest of the West Coast Conference. After a decade of downright domination, the Zags weren’t the league’s warm-andfuzzy March Madness story in 2009-10 – Saint Mary’s was. Middle-of-WCC teams and bottom feeders gave Gonzaga more of a battle than ever. But who won a 10th straight regular-season title? Who was in the NCAA bracket for a 12th consecutive year? Who’s in the Top 25 again? The Zags, naturally. Reaching those standards again will depend on how the Bulldogs compensate for the graduation of Matt Bouldin and address other hot spots – 3-point capability, foul shooting and lack of offense at the point among them. But there is a potential NBA lottery pick in rugged Elias Harris – part of about 75 percent of Gonzaga’s statistical production that returns – along with the reality that the Zags have been there and done that.

Gonzaga Backcourt

Though he sometimes struggled against athletic defenders, Bouldin was as reliable as any Zag during the decade-plus run – and replacing him is a problem exacerbated by Gonzaga’s issues at the point. Demetri Goodson is Gonzaga’s point guard in name, but his lack of production from the perimeter – he made just 4 of 29 3-point attempts – sent the Bulldogs to the JC ranks for Marquise Carter, who had 35 points in the national title game. As for Bouldin’s versatility, the Zags have that covered in senior Steven Gray – except that he hasn’t been nearly as consistent. And things need to sort themselves out at the wings, where Mangisto Arop will see more time – and no one seems to know quite what to make of European imports Mathis Keita and Mathis Monninghoff, if they’re in the fold come fall.

Gonzaga Frontcourt

No other Zags freshman has had the frontcourt impact that Harris had in 2010; only double-teaming when opponents didn’t have to respect the perimeter slowed him some as the season wore on. Center Rob Sacre should continue to improve – the 7-footer needs to find a few more boards – and may also have to be GU’s emotional leader. Kelly Olynyk will serve another year’s apprenticeship, and redshirt Sam Dower is a gifted scorer.

2010-2011 Gonzaga Predictions

It’s a rare year when the Zags don’t take their cue from a driven senior leader – which makes this season as much about Gray, what with the unsettled situation elsewhere in the backcourt, as it is about the remarkable Harris.
