Georgia Tech 2009-2010 Record: 23-13 overall; 7-9 ACC (7th)
Georgia Tech Coach: Paul Hewitt – At Georgia Tech: 177-144, 10 years; overall: 243-171, 13 years
Georgia Tech Players to Watch: The obvious candidate is Iman Shumpert, in his third year as a starter and due to bust out. Dark horse? Brian Oliver. He averaged nearly 20 points per 40 minutes.

2010-2011 Georgia Tech Season Preview
Two starters graduated, two others left early for the NBA, and Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt – a Queens native was seduced by St. John’s. Hewitt stayed, which is good news for the Yellow Jackets. But the loss of everyone else is going to hurt. Really badly. After going 23-13 last season, the Jackets probably will approach the inverse of that record this season because of their decimated frontcourt. Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal could have been All-America candidates. Instead, they’re in the NBA. Hewitt understands: Great college players don’t stay great college players for long.

Georgia Tech Backcourt
Luckily for Hewitt, he has good guards coming back – three of them, maybe four depending on which Mfon Udofia returns. The Udofia of November and December was an 11-point per game revelation, but the Udofia of the final three months disappeared (1.5 ppg). Three returning guards are known quantities, starting with point guard Iman Shumpert. With last season’s knee injury a thing of the past, he could be ready for a breakout season. The same goes for wings Brian Oliver and Glen Rice Jr., both of whom could join Shumpert in double-figure scoring. After that trio, though, it’s a mystery. Which Udofia shows up this season? Can one of the Jackets’ two senior guards, Mo Miller and Lance Storrs, make more than cameo appearances? And what of freshman Jason Morris, Georgia Tech’s best athlete since Isma’il Muhammad? Can he do something Muhammad never could – shoot? Answers to come, but at least the Jackets have plenty of options at guard.
Georgia Tech Frontcourt
The frontcourt, though, is a total mess. As well it should be. The Jackets lost a freshman (Favors) and a junior (Lawal) to the NBA Draft and for good measure, Zachery Peacock graduated. No big loss, you say? Peacock scored 1,009 career points; that’s no small loss, we say. So who’s left? Well, urn. That depends. If Oliver counts as a small forward, that’s good for the frontcourt. Unfortunately for the Jackets, that’s all that’s good for the frontcourt. At least, that’s all that’s good and established. The other options are unknown. The best two, Kammeon Holsey and Daniel Miller, are redshirt freshmen who sat out last season because of injury (Holsey) or unreadiness (Miller). Is Holsey healed from ACL surgery? Is Miller now ready? Those answers are still unknown. Fifth-year senior Brad Sheehan, who was groomed for significant minutes two years ago but rarely played last season behind Favors and LawaI, will get his final chance this season.
2010-2011 Georgia Tech Predictions
The yo-yo trajectory of Georgia Tech basketball continues. In the past seven years, the Jackets have topped 20 wins four times – but failed to top 15 the other three. When they’re good, the Jackets are very good. But when they’re bad … they look something like this. They look like a team that recruited at a high level- too high. Underclassmen left for the NBA, leaving behind a rebuilding year one season after Georgia Tech reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
