2010-2011 Georgia Season Preview

At Georgia, preseason accolades and expectations are usually bestowed upon the football team. Basketball has largely been an afterthought, primarily because the team hasn’t had a ton of success while competing in the challenging Southeastern Conference’s East Division. But last year’s arrival of new coach Mark Fox marked a fresh start and there has been a measurable shift in perception about the program now that the Bulldogs return three starters after finishing 14-17 and 5-11 in the SEC last season. Georgia fans have reason to believe that this could be the best team they’ve had since 2002. The Bulldogs return All-SEC first team forward Trey Thompkins, arguably the league’s best rebounding wing player in Travis Leslie and get to employ dynamo Tennessee State transfer Gerald Robinson.

Georgia Backcourt

Ware is a steady point guard, who ranked third in the league with a 2.2 assist/turnover ratio. But his biggest strength may be his unselfish attitude. With Robinson eligible, Ware may have to come off the bench after starting 31 games last season. Ware said he is absolutely fine if his role changes to help the team and praised Robinson’s ability. Robinson could start alongside Leslie giving Georgia a boost on offense. As a sophomore, Leslie averaged 14.8 points per game and dropped a career-high 34 points in the team’s final game against Vanderbilt. Georgia will miss Ricky McPhee’s ability to knock down treys, but to help with perimeter shooting, the Dawgs added JC transfer Sherrard Brantley.

Georgia Frontcourt

Thompkins is an SEC Player of the Year candidate after averaging 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs also return senior forwards Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes, who are solid contributors. Price was productive off the bench, giving Georgia another skilled scorer and rebounder. He averaged 7.2 points and four rebounds while playing an average of 18.6 minutes per game last season. The three veterans should get some help from freshman forward Marcus Thornton, Georgia’s high school Mr. Basketball.

2010-2011 Georgia Predictions

The higher expectations and anticipation of what the Bulldogs might accomplish haven’t made the players complacent. If anything, Ware says his teammates have worked harder than ever with new strength coach Sean Hayes to prepare for what could be a historic season highlighted by a return to the NCAA Tournament. Georgia Finish in the SEC: 4th in East Division
