The last time these two teams met, the then-No. 6 Cardinals routed the Hoyas 76-58 at the Verizon Center on Feb 23, 2009. Despite the loss, Georgetown leads the all-time series with Louisville, 5-4.
The Hoyas hopes of a Big East title have been squashed after going just 3-4 over their past seven outings, dropping then to 8-6 in the conference and sixth place. They are coming off their latest of two losses to No. 5 Syracuse during that stretch, 75-71 on Thursday. Junior guard Austin Freeman, who leads team in the scoring at 17.0 ppg while shooting 46.1 percent from three-point range, scored 21 points, and Chris Wright and Greg Monroe had 20 apiece in the loss. The Hoyas were stymied by a tight Syracuse zone defense, shooting just 42.3 percent from the field. Monroe is the team’s leading rebounder at 9.4 rpg, while Wright produces 14.4 ppg and a team-best 3.8 apg.
Conversely, the Cardinals seem to be working their way off the bubble and in to the NCAA Tournament, posting three consecutive wins in a row including victories in five of their last six. They earned their ninth conference win by handing DePaul their eighth straight loss, 68-59 on Saturday. Samardo Samuels scored 14 points and Edgar Sosa 13 and seven assists in the win. The dynamic duo is the lone double-digit scorers on the season for the Cardinals and they are combining for 29 of the team’s 78.3 ppg average. The Cardinals shot a solid 49.0 percent from the floor and made 12-of-17 free throws, had 18 assists on 25 field goals and held a 35-27 advantage on the boards.
The odds makers have the Cardinals as –3 ½-point favorites in this one.
