Georgetown lost a close one in Philly against Villanova on the weekend. Too much Scottie Reynolds but that is nothing new for many team in the Big East. The Hoyas got a monster game from Greg Monroe but they need more consistent play from forward Julian Vaughn who fouled out without scoring a point. Monroe and the solid backcourt of Austin Freeman and Chris Wright can keep the Hoyas is any game especially against a Pitt team lacking the depth of some of their most recent squad. Based on their performances thus far it looks like the Hoyas are back and that the rumours of the demise of the Panthers was a bit premature. This should be a very good, tough and tight ball game.
Pitt is one of the great surprise teams of the season so far. They lost their 3 best players from last year but have roared out to a great start led by Ashton Gibbs who has been a revelation now that he has gotten a huge boost of playing time. The Panthers are playing their usual stingy defense ranking 13th in the nation giving up only 59.1ppg. They are also undefeated at home so the Hoyas are not going to waltz in and push them around. This game is typical Big East, two talented teams that will compete hard for 40 minutes. Pitt has won the last three in the series so you can bet Georgetown is chomping at the bit to break up the streak.
The current line on this one is Pittsburgh -1.
This year’s Pitt team is more perimeter oriented than usual. For that reason I like Georgetown, behind Monroe to grab a nice road upset in close contest.
Georgetown – 62
Pittsburgh – 59
Some Georgetown/Pittsburgh series trends:
- Hoyas are 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Pittsburgh.
- Road team is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
- Underdog is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
