2009-2010 Georgetown Season Preview

There was a point last year when the Hoyas were 12-3, had beaten Maryland, Memphis, Connecticut and Syracuse and cracked the Top 10 of both major polls. Then it all unraveled.

Georgetown staggered home by finishing 4-12 before closing out with a loss in the opening round of the NIT.

Georgetown will try to climb back into the top half of the Big East with three returning starters, including center Greg Monroe, the Big East Rookie of the Year last season.

Versatile forward DaJuan Summers left a year early for the NBA and dependable guard Jessie Sapp graduated, but the bitter taste from last year’s second half fizzle is driving the returnees to atone.

Georgetown Backcourt

Wright has flashed star potential at point guard, but his decision-making needs to improve. So do his leadership skills – though that may happen naturally now that he is a junior.

Despite last year’s team meltdown, Wright turned in a solid season, averaging 12.5 points, 3.8 assists and 3.0 rebounds.

He teams with Freeman, an improving shooter, to give the Hoyas a strong starring backcourt. On a team where the leading scorer averaged 13.6 points per game, Freeman averaged 11.4 and shot 75.5 percent from the foul line.

Those two – both former McDonald’s AllAmericans – figure to log major minutes since there’s little in the way of reserve guard help.

Sophomore Jason Clark played in 31 games and averaged 18.3 minutes and 5.2 points off the bench, but he’s the only proven guard backup.

That should create an opportunity for freshman Vee Sanford, who averaged 22 points at Lexington (Ky.) Catholic High School last season. The lack of guard depth could wind up being an issue if there’s an injury.

Georgetown Frontcourt

Monroe, the third former McDonald’s AllAmerican on the roster, played well enough to be named the league’s top newcomer. But he isn’t a classic low-post Georgetown center. His strength is his versatility, as he proved by leading the team in rebounding and blocks and finishing second in scoring and assists while shooting 57.2 percent from the floor.

If there was a weakness to Monroe’s game it was his lack of consistent aggression. That figures to change after a year in college. He should also be stronger with the ball, another shortcoming from his first season.

The key is whether Monroe gets any consistent frontcourt help.

Though Nikita Mescheriakov made eight starts last year, his inability to provide significant scoring or rebounding leaves his spot vulnerable. Hollis Thompson, a freshman who enrolled in January from powerhouse De La Salle High School in California, is expected to move into the starting lineup immediately.

After that, the frontcourt picture is fuzzy. Backup center Henry Sims needs to make significant strides as a sophomore. The same holds true for junior forward Julian Vaughn, who appeared in 30 games but scored just 54 points all season.

2009-2010 Georgetown Predictions

Was the real Georgetown the team everyone saw the first half of last season or the second half? There’s no way to know just yet, but the foundation is there for this to be a competitive team. Is it an NCAA Tournament caliber one?

It’s not a given based on the uncertainty in the frontcourt and the lack of backcourt depth. Thompson’s biggest challenges are getting this team to be more aggressive and to improve defensively. The chemistry that was missing last year will follow if that happens. Georgetown Finish in the Big East: 6th
