2010-2011 Fresno State Season Preview
It would be easy for Fresno State coach Steve Cleveland to bemoan the loss of Paul George to the NBA and Sylvester Seay to graduation. After all, the talented players were the top scorers and rebounders on a team that finished in the middle of the WAC. But instead of looking behind him, Cleveland is embracing a future that boasts two returning starters and a solid recruiting class that includes a couple of standout guards. Whether this is enough to compete for a conference title will play out in the corning campaign, but suffice to say Cleveland is quietly confident. Among the Bulldogs’ returning starters is 6-9 sophomore Greg Smith, a promising prospect who figures to be the center of attention whenever Fresno State needs points in the paint. His numbers were muted somewhat last year with George and Seay garnering a majority of the looks. His potential, however, knows no bounds. Joining him in the starting lineup is Steven Shepp, the point man who dished out 146 assists in his first year with the program. The Bulldogs also expected Mike Ladd back, but the Seattle native transferred to Washington State during the summer. The Bulldogs signed two guards in incoming freshman Kevin Olekaibe and junior college transfer Tim Steed. Prep player Olekaibe led the state of Nevada last year in scoring. Steed is expected to step in and play right away, his outside touch reminiscent of George’s. Where the Bulldogs could struggle is in the post. After Smith, the talent level dips. Senior forward Nedeljko Golubovic returns after a somewhat disappointing season. Cleveland is counting on Golubovic, an honor student off the court and a team captain, to provide much-needed leadership. He has 44 starts over three years, but only one last season. Also in the .mix is New Mexico transfer Jonathan Wills. The 6-6 small forward sat out last year after starting 19 games for the Lobos during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He has a nice outside touch from long range, hitting 33 of 85 3-pointers while at New Mexico for 38.3 percent.
