2010-2011 Fordham Season Preview

It’s back to the drawing board in the Bronx as Tom Pecora, Hofstra’s coach for the past nine years, takes over at Fordham. Pecora appears to be a good hire. He was 155126 in nine seasons at Hofstra, winning at least 19 games five times, and the Queens native has strong recruiting ties in the Big Apple. But he takes over a real mess at Fordham, a program that has gone 1-31 in the Atlantic 10 play over the past two seasons. It has been impossible for the Rams to compete for recruits when many A-10 programs (example: Temple, Xavier, Rhode Island, Saint Louis) have beautiful, state-of-the-art buildings, while Fordham toils in antiquated Rose Hill Gym, a small facility that is just three years younger than actress Betty White and not holding up nearly as well. But the school’s powers-that-be have vowed to pour more money into the program and Step One was hiring Pecora away from Hofstra, a legit CAA title contender this winter. Considering the last Hofstra coach has done well for his next program – Jay Wright at Villanova – is another reason to like the move. Pecora has one of the best young players in the A-10 on his roster in 6-7 sophomore forward Chris Gaston. Last season, Gaston led all NCAA freshmen in rebounding and was second among all NCAA freshmen in scoring and double-doubles (19). Gaston is one of two returning double-figure scorers for the Rams – the other being senior shooting guard Brenton Butler, who canned 55 3-pointers and is poised for a big senior season. But Gaston and Butler need help -lots of it, in fact. Junior guard Alberto Estwick, a high school teammate of Gaston at· perennial prep powerhouse St. Anthony (N.J.), and Bosnian-born banger Fahro Alihodzic are the best of the other returnees, so Pecora will count heavily on new recruits, most notably a pair of Brooklyn guards in Branden Frazier and Lamount Samuell, as well as skinny shot-swatting JC import Kervin BristoL The additions of Frazier and Samuell give the Rams two viable, albeit young, options at point guard, something the program didn’t have once Jio Fontan bolted for USC last year.
