2009-2010 Florida International Season Preview
The Golden Panthers had so many injuries last year that seven walk-on players saw action. Senior stars Alex Galindo (ankle) and Russell Hicks (foot), sophomore guard Josue Soto (thumb) and SBC Newcomer of the Year Freddy Asprilla (back) combined to miss 50 games. FIU got healthy just in time for the conference tournament, where it advanced to the quarterfinals for only the second time in coach Sergio Rouco’s five seasons. Rouco (55-94 overall) has since been fired, replaced by NBA Hall of Fame guard Isiah Thomas (.456 winning percentage in five years coaching Indiana and New York). Asprilla, the league leader in double doubles, has transferred, but Thomas landed a sensational six-deep recruiting class in just two months.
