2010-2011 Creighton Season Preview
Two new faces provide hope that the Bluejays are capable of making a quick turnaround from last season’s uncharacteristic struggle. Creighton finished 18-16, ending a streak of 11 seasons with 20 or more victories. The Blue Jays managed to extend their streak of consecutive postseason appearances to 13 by playing in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. A month after a season-ending loss to Missouri State in the CIT semifinals, Dana Altman ended his 16-year run at Creighton, leaving to take the job at Oregon. Athletic director Bruce Rasmussen needed just more than 24 hours to secure Altman’s replacement by luring Greg McDermott back to the Missouri Valley. McDermott laid the foundation for Northern Iowa’s development into a Valley power, playing in three straight NCAA tournaments before moving on to Iowa State after the 2006 season. His return has energized a segment of the Creighton fan base that felt the Bluejays had grown stagnant under Altman in the past few years. He left behind a talented group of players, including second-team All-Valley center Kenny Lawson Jr., who led the Bluejays in almost every offensive category and could become an even more effective threat with the addition of newcomer Greg Echenique. The 6-9, 275-pound Echenique averaged 8,4 points and 8,4 rebounds per game as a true freshman at Rutgers during the 2008-09 season. He was averaging 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds in the first seven games last season when an eye injury ended his season. Echenique won’t be eligible until the end of the first semester but will have two more seasons of eligibility remaining after this one. McDermott also expects big things out of point guard Antoine Young and sharp-shooting sophomore Ethan Wragge. One player who won’t be contributing is P’Allen Stinnett, the talented but troubled guard who was indefinitely suspended for the final two months of last season. McDermott decided the suspension would be permanent for Stinnett, who scored 1,024 points in 2 1/2 seasons as a Bluejay.
