Cornell Big Red vs Kentucky Wildcats Preview, Odds & Prediction
No. 1 seed Kentucky Wildcats are a team stocked with talented players at every position. They are led by freshman sensation John Wall, who has been clutch at the right times, along with DeMarcus Cousins who is unstoppable inside. Kentucky’s offense is explosive, but the Wildcats’ strength is actually their defense with Patrick Patterson — up front and Darius Miller to name a few. They have depth, but will need key players to avoid foul trouble the deeper they get into the tournament. Three-point shooting has been sporadic, but Wall hit a huge three to clinch the win over the Bulldogs. The team is young and could be dissected by a team that is adept at changing defenses on the fly, as well as putting up three’s on offense.
The last time an Ivy League team made it to the Sweet 16 was 1979. Thirty-one years later Cornell will have the Ivy Leagues’ best chance at a national title, but will have to get past one the nation’s best teams. The Big Red blasted by Temple and Wisconsin and has the size inside and the shooters outside to compete with just about any team, but the shear athleticism of Kentucky poses a whole new set of challenges. Ryan Wittman winner of the Ivy League Player of the Year honors leads the team along with seven-foot center Jeff Foote. Foote’s a legitimate center who poses a threat both on defense and on the boards, and can both score and find the open man on offense. Coupled with Cornell’s barrage of 3-point shooters, this could be the equalizer to Kentucky’s athletic size in the middle.
The odds makers have the Wildcats s as -9-point favorites.
The Big Red have proven they can beat top teams and should make this on interesting until the closing moments when Kentucky opens up a run to win by six points.
