2009-2010 Colorado State Season Preview
Of five sophomore coaches in the Mountain West last season, Tim Miles was the only one without a single carryover from the prior coaching regime.
He and his staff have recruited well considering the lack of recent success. The home-court advantage that is typical around the conference is noticeably absent in Fort Collins, and Miles said candidly a year ago that the future of the team was with freshman guard Jesse Carr and sophomore Andy Ogide.
He was right, as the pair combined for nearly 20 points per game. The Rams were a better team even if they still weren’t good enough to draw anybody into the arena.
Miles will take scrappers over pure scorers any day, so when Tubby Smith didn’t renew Travis Busch’s scholarship after the 6-4 forward graduated from Minnesota with a year of eligibility remaining, Miles was more than happy to take the 2005 Minnesota Gatorade High School Player of the Year, but a blown knee suffered during the summer puts his future in question.
Walk-on guard Adam Nigon won a scholarship by plastering himself on opponents, despite a lack of innate athletic skill. Carr, forced to step in for top scorer Marcus Walker for the early part of conference play, showed a maturity belying his small-school Nebraska experience.
Aside from Ogide there is little force inside. Purdue transfer Dan Vandervieren had offered hope at center, but a multitude of injuries ended his career.
There were times the Rams were painfully close, losing to Utah in overtime and New Mexico in double-overtime at the end of the season. Improvement was inevitable for Colorado State after it failed to win a Mountain West Conference regular-season game the previous season. If the Rams can make another four game step in the correct direction, Miles will have achieved a significant turnabout.
More likely, the Rams are still a season or two away.
