2009-2010 Colorado Season Preview

Jeff Bzdelik coached his two previous instate teams – the Denver Nuggets and Air Force Academy – into the postseason. He never promised an overnight turnaround at his third club, the Universiry of Colorado. No rush. Winning seasons in Boulder have been the exception, not the rule.

Perhaps the Buffs have hit bottom. Last season’s one-win Big 12 ledger represented the worst conference campaign since the 1986 Big Eight season.

Maybe they were just glimpses of a young club’s future or the natural tendency for opponents to overlook the Buffs, but there were some hopeful signs. Colorado took Kansas State and Texas into overtime at home, came within five points of Oklahoma on the road and lost twice to Nebraska by a combined seven points.

The team is still young, with a senior, junior and two sophomores among the returning starters.

An even younger influx might just provide some of the missing strength and depth. The toughness still must be learned.

Colorado Backcourt

The three-guard backcourt spread out the scoring and negative assist-to-turnover ratios. CU’s iron man is 6-5 big guard Cory Higgins, a junior who led the team in scoring (17.4) and minutes (37.1).

The only other returning double-figure scorer is senior Dwight Thorne II, a 6-2 guard who became CU’s top threat behind the arc.

Aussie import Nate Tomlinson took over at the point and, despite his youth, he was one of the few Buffs to finish with more assists (83) than turnovers (77). Maybe it was coincidence, but Bzdelik insists CU lost decisively when Tomlinson was on the negative side.

He gained valuable experience with the Australian entry in the World University Games this summer.

Bzdelik expects depth to come from his incoming class, particularly 6-5 freshman guard Alec Burks, who needs to polish his defense.

Colorado Frontcourt

This is the Buffs’ area of greatest loss and greatest recruiting gain. The sole graduating starter was forward Jermyl Jackson-Wilson, who led the Buffs with 20 blocked shots. Freshman Toby Veal showed some flashes of potential, but he transferred out after averaging just 6.5 minutes.

Colorado played without a true center last season and that changes with the arrival of 6-11, 240-pound Shane Harris-Tunks. A freshman in name only, he attended the renowned Australian Institute of Sport. He expanded his resume this summer on two Aussie under-19 clubs.

How urgent is the need? The Buffs plunged to the nether regions of the NCAA rebound margin column last year, taking a minus-6.

While the latest Australian addition figures to have a big defensive role, Indian Hills (Iowa) CC transfer Marcus Relphorde brings some needed overall versatility.

The much-traveled 6-7 junior also spent a year at Saint Louis and can play four positions. The most experienced returnee up front is Austin Dufault, who started all 31 games and managed an 8.2 scoring average.

2009-2010 Colorado Predictions

While there isn’t much tradition associated with Colorado basketball – where the biggest recruiting draw is the most scenic backdrop in the Big 12 – there’s little doubt the Buffs will improve with experience and Bzdelik’s impressive recruiting efforts.

Still, Colorado lacks inside depth and the overall power and athleticism to keep up with the Big 12 on a nightly basis. A potentially good showcase will be the Maui Invitational, which lines up NCAA regulars Gonzaga, Arizona, Cincinnati, Maryland and Wisconsin. Colorado Finish in the Big 12: 11th
