2010-2011 Central Florida Season Preview
Of the many tl~ings Donnie Jones brings to UCF as its new coach, one aspect is the experience of seeing how a national championship program is built. J ones, the former Marshall assistant coach, hopes to take what he learned from 11 seasons as an assistant under Florida’s Billy Donovan and help transform the Knights’ program into a desired location for the country’s top recruits. Immediately after taking the job, Jones took a tour of high schools throughout Florida, just as Donovan did when he was hired at Florida. And, like Donovan, Jones will employ an up-tempo system that he anticipates will attract NBA-Ievel talent. Of course, given that the Knights had one of the youngest teams in the country last season, perhaps the 15-17 finish wasn’t as bad as it·looks. Still, all of the Knights’ shortcomings cannot be blamed on inexperience considering sometimes young players just aren’t good. Jones hopes that’s not the case at UCF. Sophomore guard Marcus Jordan had to learn about college basketball on the fly. He started the season coming off the bench and eventually played his way into the starting lineup. The son of NBA great Michael Jordan, the 6-3 Jordan averaged 8.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Jones wants to give Jordan more touches on offense. There are questions at point guard with 5-9 junior A.J. Rompza, who led the team with 5.1 assists and 37 steals while averaging 8.6 points. Rompza was at less than 100 percent and played most of last season with a sore knee. Shooting guard Isaac Sosa shared the team scoring honors by averaging 10.3 a game, but the Knights lack a proven perimeter go-to threat. Keith Clanton, a 6-8 forward, led the team with 6.8 rebounds and 45 blocks while averaging 9.7 points, and swingman Dave Diakite will also be looked to for improved play. A.J. Tyler, who shared team-high scoring honors with Sosa, is back, but the Knights have to be tougher off the glass after losing the rebounding battle to opponents. Jones anticipates 6-8 junior college transfer Dwight McCombs has the best chance to make an immediate impact.
