2009-2010 Bradley Season Preview

Few teams have played deeper into March the past two seasons than the Bradley Braves.

Bradley made it to the championship round in 2008 of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational. The Braves picked up another second-place trophy last season when they made it to the championship game of the first CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CBI).

Whether Bradley can find its way back to the NCAA Tournament this season is questionable without the presence of a special big man to take some of the pressure off a deep and talented backcourt. That’s the ingredient Bradley has been lacking since Patrick O’Bryant left for professional basketball after leading the Braves to the Sweet 16 of the 2006 NCAA Tournament.

Bradley lost its most effective frontcount player – All-Valley forward Theron Wilson – as well as 7-footer David Collins. Their prospective replacements – Taylor Brown, Will Egolf, Sam Singh and Anthony Thompson – combined to average 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds a game.

Egolf is coming back from a serious knee injury that ended his sophomore campaign five games in. The NCAA granted the 6-9 Singh a sixth season of eligibility because of changes to its medical-hardship rule.

Bradley’s best player also is coming back from injury. Andrew Warren missed last season with a foot injury, and although he underwent a second surgery in May, the junior is expected to be ready for the season.

He’ll join Sam Maniscalco, Chris Roberts, Dodie Dunson and Eddren McCain to give the Braves one of the league’s best backcourts. Warren averaged 13.2 points as a sophomore, and the other four guards combined to average 36.6 points last season.
