2009-2010 Boston College Season Preview
It’s not that the Eagles didn’t try to recruit some new players for the 2009-10 season. It’s just that those they targeted decided to go elsewhere.
So BC is a rarity on the D-1 landscape, featuring no newcomers. Oh, coach Al Skinner will likely add another walk-on, just so he can have 12 players for practice, but he’s going with the same group that won 22 games a year ago – with one notable exception.
Tyrese Rice is a staggering loss. There may have been no player in the country as valuable to his team as was the 6-1 playmaker. Still, four starters return along with four other significant contributors, so the Eagles are not bereft. They just must redefine themselves. For the past two years, it’s been Rice and everybody else. A leader must emerge for when key moments arise.
What the Eagles do have is an interesting collection of versatile inside-out players that makes them tough to guard. The team is not particularly big, although Josh Southern does go 6-10. It is not overly fast, even though guard Biko Paris can move. But it does give Skinner plenty of options, even with just 10 scholarship players.
For instance, although Rice was clearly the top assist man with 176 last year, five other Eagles had at least 50. Look around the nation and you won’t find many teams with that kind of generosity. Five different Eagles also proved they could bang home
the three last year. So, if Skinner wants to move the ball all over and feature different handlers and different snipers, he can. And since all four returning starters played in every game last season, the team’s experience level is high.

Boston College Backcourt
Paris gets the unwelcome task of replacing Rice in the starting lineup. He, of course, won’t be expected to mimic Rice’s numbers, but he’ll have to distribute effectively and score both off the dribble and from distance, the better to make things easier for the interior folks. Sophomore Reggie Jackson struggled with his shot at times last year, but showed good ball skills and defended willingly.
Boston College Frontcourt
Junior forward Joe Trapani had a fine debut last year, having sat out the previous season following a transfer from Vermont. He scored inside and out, did a fine job on the boards and blocked a shot a game. His challenge now is to become a better finisher inside and get to the line.
Rakim Sanders, a powerful 6-5 swingman, must move from complementary piece to featured performer. That will entail better success from behind the arc and fewer turnovers, but Sanders gets to the rim and defends like a demon.
The final member of what should be the team’s offensive triumvirate is junior forward Corey Raji, an interior player who is great on the offensive boards. He could score 15 points a night, although his lack of an outside game makes him more limited. The fourth returning starter is Southern, a fine rebounder and defender who is limited offensively but still needs to pump up the scoring average as part of the team-wide commitment to replacing Rice. Forward Tyler Roche, the lone senior on the team, helped down the stretch and brings a good shooting eye.
2009-2010 Boston College Predictions
Just because the Eagles have no new faces doesn’t consign them to the ACC basement. In fact, the experienced band that returns will be a tough opponent for even the best of the conference. The question is whether a point guard emerges to take over for Rice. Meanwhile, last year’s complementary scorers must all step up. Skinner doesn’t use a deep rotation, so he doesn’t have to worry about great depth. Then again, if the Eagles are hit by injuries, he’ll wish some of those prep prospects had chosen BC.
