Boise State Players to Watch: Daequon Montreal transferred to BSU last season, and the 6-7 forward started 14 games and scored in double figures 19 times in being named to the WAC’s All-Newcomer squad. The native New Yorker is great around the rim and asolid defender.

2010-2011 Boise State Season Preview

The 2010-11 season will be the Broncos’ last as part of the WAC as they will jump to the Mountain West following this school year. In addition to that, BSU replaced Greg Graham with Leon Rice, who had served as an assistant at Gonzaga for the past 11 seasons. Wins and losses were part of the reason for Graham’s dismissal, but they weren’t the sole reason that he was let go after eight seasons. Graham went 142-112 during his tenure, set a single-season record for wins with 25 and led BSU to three postseason tournaments, including an NCAA appearance in 2008 – its first since 1994. That resume is good enough to keep your job at a lot of schools, but interest in Bronco basketball has waned for years, and the gap between the success of the hoops and the football pr~grams became too large for Graham to survive. The hope is that the hiring of a coach from a respected program – especially one of Gonzaga’s notoriety – will stimulate interest and ticket sales. But Rice has his work cut out for him on several fronts; even the best Boise State teams have been ignored over the years by a population that is wild about BSU football and indiffernt to all else. He will inherit a team that looks similar to its predecessor, which is not necessarily a good thing. The Broncos finished just 5-11 in conference play last season, which can almost be classified as a success when considering their 0-7 start. Seven seniors return, as do four of Boise State’s top five scorers. BSU’s leading scorer, Ike Okoye, is gone, but Robert Arnold, Daequon Montreal, La’Shard Anderson and Paul Noonan are returning. Scoring, however, wasn’t the main cause of last season’s shortcomings. BSU struggled more on the defensive end, placing fifth in the WAC in scoring defense and last in field-goal percentage defense. BSU is excited about a few of its more unknown entities. Guard Westly Perryman missed most of last season and is expected to contribute right away, as is redshirt freshman forward Sam Hicks.
