The Bears downed the Longhorns 76-70 on Mar 13, 2009, snapping a 24-game losing streak against Texas, and advancing to the Big 12 championship game for the first time in school history.
Baylor dropped to 2-3 in conference play after No. 11 Kansas State handed then a 76-74 loss by scoring two free throws with 8.2 seconds remaining in their last outing. The defeat ended the Bears’ school-record 11-game home winning streak. Baylor standout LaceDarius Dunn managed only nine points on 3 of 13 shooting after a five-game stretch when he had at least 20 points four times. He leads the Bears, averaging just less than 19 points per game. Senior guard Tweety Carter scored a team-high 23 points in the loss. Baylor has won 22 of their last 28 games dating back to last season. A big part of their success has been their inside-outside attack, led by forward Ekpe Udoh and star guard LaceDarius Dunn. There offensive attack creates difficulties for the opposition to defend on the kick-outs, while trying not to collapse in the paint.
After losing two consecutive games the Longhorns bounced back improving their conference play record to 4-1 with a 95-83 win over Texas Tech on Wednesday night. Damion James finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds setting a Big 12 record for career double-doubles with 48. James is Texas’ leading scorer with an average of 18 ppg. Justin Mason added 18 points and Dogus Balbay contributed 13 in the win. The Longhorns have out-rebounded their opponents in 15 of 20 games this season including the Red Raiders 45-23, who were playing without both of their starting forwards. The Longhorns no longer occupy first place in the Big 12, so a win over division rival Baylor will be coveted.
The odds makers have Baylor at +10 ½ -point underdogs in this one.
The Horns have historically been able to control the paint against the Bears and will look to control Dexter Pittman inside.
Expect this game to be a battle with the Longhorns notching a 7-point victory in the final 10 minutes.
