2009-2010 Arizona Season Preview

For a while, the 2009-10 season of Arizona basketball was shaping up to be a lot like Indiana of last season: A painful rebuilding year with a new coach, a skimpy roster and no hope of contending for anything. Not anymore.

If there was such a thing as Coach of the Offseason, Sean Miller might be first in line to grab the award. After kicking the tires on some elite coaches and dallying with since departed USC coach Tim Floyd, Arizona lured Miller from Xavier – welcome news for a program that spent two full seasons with interim coaches in the wake of Lute Olson’s health problems.

Miller helped convince point guard Nic Wise to return for his senior season and restocked the team with a five-man recruiting class that exceeded expectations. He wasn’t just filling the roster, either. Never taking his eye off the long-range plan, Miller landed players who are Arizona good.

Arizona Backcourt

Wise, the team’s only senior, should be the undisputed leader of the young Wildcats, who have 10 underclassmen.

Miller typically uses a nine-man rotation, but there is no proven help behind Wise, who averaged more than 36 minutes per game last season. He’ll likely continue to get as many minutes as he can handle, although freshman Lamont Jones or sophomore Garland Judkins can help.

Kyle Fogg returns at shooting guard after a solid freshman season as a defender and role player. He can knock down an open shot, but he’s not flashy and not much of a threat to drive. His energy, defense and coach ability make him valuable, but the wing spots are Arizona’s most crowded position.

Other than Wise, the Wildcats don’t have a returning player who can consistently get to the hoop. Maybe that could be Jones, who could play alongside Wise in a backcourt with two sub-6-footers.

Or Miller could go big with freshmen Solomon Hill or Kevin Parrom at guard. Miller will be able to mix and match along the perimeter, with a lot of interchangeable parts in his four-out, one-in offense.

Miller ran a moderately paced offense at Xavier, and is expected to eventually increase the pace with better athletes at Arizona. This version of the Wildcats, though, doesn’t appear to be an offensive juggernaut.

Arizona Frontcourt

Based on his position, the team’s most important newcomer is center Kyryl Naryazhko, who is one of two true posts on the team. The other is redshirt sophomore Alex Jacobson, who projects as a guy with limited minutes off the bench.

Unlike last season when the Wildcats had future lottery pick Jordan Hill, not much of the offense will go through the low post.

There isn’t much in the way of a traditional power forward. Athletic and enigmatic junior Jamelle Horne handled the spot most of last season. Newcomers Hill, Parrom and Derrick Williams are the kind of players Miller used to success at Xavier – long wings who should fit well into his defensive pack-line philosophy.

Miller mostly will use a man-to-man, predicated on ball pressure, with the other defenders sagging to choke off the lane and gain position for rebounds.

The athleticism in the frontcourt should show itself on defense before making a consistent impact on offense.

2009-2010 Arizona Predictions

Without Hill and Chase Budinger, Arizona might take a step back, but Miller has erased concerns about the direction of the program. His recruiting gives the Wildcats a reasonable chance to make their 26th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
