2010-2011 Alabama Season Preview
Under first-year coach Anthony Grant, the Crimson Tide developed into a smothering defensive team that forced tempo and utilized athleticism. Despite losing leading scorer Alonzo Gee, who was also the team’s second-best rebounder, the players adjusted well to Grant’s aggressive philosophy. The Crimson Tide won only one fewer game in both Southeastern Conference play and overall. Though Grant is accustomed to winning big – he helped Florida win the school’s first-ever national championship in 2006 as an assistant to Billy Donovan and led Virginia Commonwealth to two NCAA Tournament appearances in three seasons and three Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles in as many years – his players have been pleased with the foundation.

Alabama Backcourt
Hillman is the team’s returning assists and steals leader and is a tenacious defender. Tony Mitchell landed on the All-SEC Freshman Team after averaging 9.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Grant expects him to have a tremendous year now that he won’t have to play in the paint as much. Alabama didn’t attempt a ton of 3-pointers, but ranked fifth in the league in 3-point field goal percentage. Charvez Davis, one of three seniors on the team, shot 40.6 percent from behind the arc last season. Grant added guards Trevor Releford and Charles Hankerson Jr., giving him more options on the perimeter. Releford, a terrific playmaker who is the younger brother of Kansas sophomore guard Travis Releford, should crack the rotation early, while Hankerson is a tough defender who can play several positions. Cagey defender Andrew Steele is back after missing most of last season with a broken ankle. Ben Eblen will be a reserve point guard.
Alabama Frontcourt
The Crimson Tide won’t have much depth up front, but does have JaMychal Green, one of the best posts in the league. Green is tied as the second-leading returning rebounder in the SEC after averaging 7.2 per game last season. He’s also Bama’s returning scoring leader (14.1 ppg.). Forward Chris Hines, a 6-8 intimidator inside, is the only other returning post player. Alabama will need him to clean up the glass and get buckets when possible. Newcomers Jason Carter and 7-1 Carl Engstrom will be called upon to give Green ~nd Hines a rest. Carter is a strong 6-8 competitive beast, and Engstrom is a late bloomer from Sweden with great coordination.
2010-2011 Alabama Predictions
If Alabama stays healthy and avoids foul trouble, it has a chance to finish in the top three of the SEC West. Grant thinks the returning players have a better grasp of his system and need to guide the newcomers.
Alabama Finish in the SEC: 2nd in West Division
