2010-2011 Air Force Season Preview
The ~ir Force renaissance now seems like a mIrage. In the first three years of the Mountain West, the Falcons averaged 3.2 league wins, consistent with its prior history. From the 2004 M~C championship to the 2008 break-even season, Air Force averaged 10.2 wins through three different coaches. The academy has mustered only one MWC win in the past two seasons, although the Falcons came out an upset winner in each MWC Tournament play-in game. One culprit is that the Falcons have become one of the lowest-scoring teams in Division I, averaging only 57.2 points an outing. That was fine when the defense ranked among the top five nationally, but that, too, has slid. This could be a pivotal season for coach Jeff Reynolds. The lack of coaching continuity during the years that saw two NCAA trips and an NIT semifinal no doubt hurt the Falcons. The Princeton system brought in by Joe Scott long ago lost its novelty and evolved from what he and successors Chris Mooney and Jeff Bzdelik ran. The talent, chemistry and leadership that marked the successful outfits just haven’t materialized for Reynolds, while most of the MWC has improved annually. The Falcons are still scrappers by nature and played better down the stretch than any time all season. III think it shows the resiliency of our kids, the fact that they never quit, even though they were getting hammered by the media and other avenues. They just keep coming. I think that’s what the Academy is about. They build that character,” Reynolds said at the end of the season. This year the Falcons should be competitive enough for a handful of MWC wins. Leading the charge is guard Evan Washington, a rare four-year starter. Tom Fow, a 38 percent 3-point shooter as a 6-6 forward, is another senior. One of the big blows a year ago came in practice when 6-11 center Sammy Schafer suffered a concussion. He wasn’t cleared to play again and looks doubtful this season. Most of the new additions had a year at AFA’s on-campus Prep School, and several could contribute early among the eight freshmen.
