2009-2010 Air Force Season Preview
Lack of coaching stability since Air Force’s run of success finally caught up with the Falcons last season.
The defense, which had annually ranked among the nation’s leaders, fell to 48th at 62.5 points. Clune Arena, which provided a 68-6 home advantage in the previous five years, lost its magic. A non-league home loss to Wofford in December gave a hint of things to come as the Falcons absorbed one loss after another in the Mountain West.
AFA lost 17 straight games and went winless in conference play for the first time in its history. The Falcons then turned around and grabbed their first conference tournament win since 1990 and gave league tri-champ BYU a battle for a half in the
next round.
The squad just lost touch with the so-called Princeton system that led to the historic runaround under Joe Scott in 2004. Current third year coach Jeff Reynolds is the fourth Falcons coach this decade.
The short rotation and regular starting lineup that marked the successful years changed as Reynolds went through 10 starters in search of the right chemistry.
This time around, veterans with playing experience are in short supply. The four seniors, led by Grant Parker, bring in only 22 combined career starts. AFA lost three seniors. Another three underclassmen left the academy.
The lack of senior stars could work the other way, too. Reynolds listed 21 players on his summer roster (the academies are exempt from NCAA scholarship limits), indicating extensive competition for playing time. That preseason roster shows 12 products of the AFA Prep School. That counts as a quick fix at Air Force, a team that can’t recruit JC players.
