Sacramento Kings 2010 Preview & Prediction
If the Sacramento Kings were participating in a 2-on-2 tournament, such as in the video game world of NBA Jam, they would be set. Twelve months after watching eventual Rookie of the Year guard Tyreke Evans fall to them at NO.4 in the 2009 draft, Sacramento once again came away with arguably the best raw material in the field. Picking fifth, the Kings snared center DeMarcus Cousins out of Kentucky, giving themselves a bookend pair of talents to build around. At one point last season the Kings trotted out the franchise’s youngest starting lineup since moving to California in 1985, and with Evans and Cousins there’s potential for a bright future. But in the short term, Maloof’s light is still likely a train rather than salvation. After shipping scoring machine Kevin Martin whose game never meshed with Evans’ – to Houston in February as part of a three-way trade that netted them Carl Landry, the Kings have swung like a pendulum, going from being too weak up front to potentially under populated in the backcourt. They have only four backcourt players with significant NBA experience, and one of them, Francisco Garcia, missed 57 games after breaking an arm in afreak weightlifting accident.

Sacramento Kings Key Losses: F Ike Diogu .
2010 Sacramento Kings Point Guards:
Rules changes limiting defensive contact against perimeter players have helped to make this a golden age of sorts for point guards. Tyreke Evans figures to work his way on to the short list of top point guards and stay there for quite some time. He is able to get into the paint at will and then either finish strong or else dish the ball to an open teammate. However, just about any shot he takes outside of the paint is an adventure: Evans barely made a third of his two point jump shots and he was even more brutal from behind the three point arc (36-141, .255). In order to lead the Kings to the playoffs and then eventually help them to win some postseason series; Evans will have develop a better and more reliable outside shot to complement his driving and post up skills. Beno Udrih had the most productive season of his six-year career. He played well as a backup and had some big games while starting in Evans’ place when Evans missed some games due to injury. Udrih also was effective in the second half of the season when starting alongside Evans, which simply added fuel to the popular debate about whether or not Evans is better suited to play point guard or shooting guard – and whether, indeed, Evans was strictly speaking even plaYing point guard when the smaller Udrih was on the coun at the same time. Evans and Udrih posted virtually identical assist per minute numbers while Udrih is a much more proficient shooter.
2010 Sacramento Kings Off Guards:
If healthy, Francisco Garcia may be the starting shooting guard, depending on how Evans is classified and whether or not the Kings elect to start Evans and Udrih in order to deploy Garcia as a weapon off of the bench. Garcia led the Kings in three-point field goal percentage (.390) but he played in just 25 games. Garcia shot a similar percentage behind the arc (.398) during 65 games in the 2008-09 season, so he likely will once again be the Kings’ most reliable long-range shooter. Regardless of who starts and who is designated as a point guard or a shooting guard, Evans, Udrih and Garcia will receive the bulk of the team’s backcourt minutes.
2010 Sacramento Kings Small Forwards:
Third-year man Donte Greene-who started 50 games – and second-year man Omri Casspi are in a tight battle for the starting spot and the outcome might not be decided until just before the regular season begins. Greene is a big, athletic player who has markedly improved his three-point shooting (.377 last season after posting a .260 mark as a rookie) while Casspi got off to a great start as a rookie but seemed to hit the proverbial rookie wall after the All-Star break. During 2010 summer league play Greene and Casspi alternated starts, with Casspi putting up better individual numbers but the Kings enjoying a better team scoring differential when Greene was on the court. Journeyman Antoine Wright figures to be the third man in the small forward rotation.
2010 Sacramento Kings Power Forwards:
Carl Landry suffered a gun shot wound to his left leg in 2009 and he has been involved in multiple on court collisions that knocked out various teeth, but he has never complained about his injuries and he missed only two games last season. He is a strong finisher in the paint, but he also has a reliable mid-range jumper, a combination of skills that has enabled him to shoot .557 from the field during his NBA career. Landry is a solid offensive rebounder, but as a power forward he should be a little bit more effective on the defensive glass. Jason Thompson started 58 games, most of them at power forward but some at center after the Kings acquired Landry and starting center Spencer Hawes got hurt. Thompson led the Kings in rebounds. Thompson had 24 double-doubles and has the potential to average a double-double if he is provided sufficient playing time. Lottery pick DeMarcus Cousins is expected to be a prominent rotation player at either power forward or center, positional designations that have become almost interchangeable. He is a very talented big man but he is also just 19 years old so he has to work on his maturity and focus. Cousins is a classic example of a player who has “tremendous upside” yet is also considered in some quarters to be a potential bust. Will he stay in shape? Is he highly motivated to bring forth maximum effort on a nightly basis?
2010 Sacramento Kings Centers:
Spencer Hawes stared 59 games at center but after the season the Kings shipped him to Philadelphia for Samuel Dalembert, a long-armed shot blocking machine who has ranked in the top ten in the league in that category five times. Dalembert is also an excellent rebounder but his offensive game is strictly limited to dunks and putbacks. He figures to be the starting center, with Cousins and slender rookie Hassan Whiteside also manning the middle at times. This position is the wild card for the Kings and could very well determine just how seriously they contend for a playoff spot.
