New Jersey Nets 2010 Preview & Prediction

As the Nets were staggering through the franchise’s worst season and one of the most dismal in NBA history, their marketing geniuses had already started promoting the 2010-11 campaign. They chose the slogan, “It’s All New.” And they weren’t kidding. The Nets have a new owner, a new general manager, a new head coach, three new assistants, a new roster (more than half of it was turned over) and even a new building – the Prudential Center in Newark. Failing to land LeBron James in free agency killed some excitement, but there still is a buzz you don’t often find after a 12-70 season. It comes mostly from the unlimited resources and bravado of owner Mikhail Prokhorov. The Russian billionaire promised the Nets would make the playoffs this season – which would be remarkable – and would win a title within five years. That would be miraculous. Prokhorov has breathed excitement and confidence into the franchise, and new coach Avery Johnson is driven to make his owner’s promises come true. Johnson, nicknamed “The Little General,” knows about winning and leading teams. He won a title as a player and coached the Mavericks to the 2006 Finals. His 194-70 career record gives him the best regularseason winning percentage in league history (.735). Rod Thorn, the architect of the team’s best NBA years, resigned as president in July. His successor, former Sixers president Billy King, will try to use the flexibility and assets he inherited to turn the Nets into a contender again. In the meantime, the Nets will rely heavily on this young, athletic team buying into Johnson’s defense-first mentality, and player development.

New Jersey Nets Coach: Avery Johnson (1st season)

New Jersey Nets Projected Starters: PG Devin Harris, SG Terrence Williams, SF Travis Outlaw, PF Troy Murphy, C Brook Lopez.

New Jersey Nets Key Additions:G Jordan Farmar, F Travis Outlaw.

New Jersey Nets Key Losses:C Tony Battie, G Courtney Lee, G Chris Douglas-Roberts.

2010 New Jersey Nets Point Guards:

Harris was an All-Star two years ago and hopes to return to that level. But the often injured point guard needs to stay healthy and show he and Johnson can work together after the two had differences in Dallas. This is a big season for Harris and the future of the Nets. Harris, who averaged 16.9 points and 6.6 assists last year, has to prove he can lead a team. If he does, it would improve the Nets’ playoff chances and could increase his trade value. For the Nets to reach a championship level they probably will have to deal for a superstar and a good, young point guard could be quite a chip. Since leaving Dallas, Harris’ offense has improved and defense has slipped. Johnson likely will try to get Harris to defend again and focus on making his teammates better. Harris’ backup is ex-Laker Jordan Farmar, a good pickup who understands what it takes to win, how to run a team and can knock down shots. The Nets need all of those things. They nearly drafted Farmar in 2006 and traded for him this season. They finally got him and think he 11 be worth the wait. Second-year pro Terrence Williams, who could be used to facilitate a trade, should play some point also. The 6-foot-6 Williams had a 14-assist game last season, matching Harris for the Nets’ season high.

2010 New Jersey Nets Off Guards:

Courtney Lee’s trade to Houston in August made WillIams and Morrow their main options at shooting guard. Harris and Farmar also can play the position, but don’t have the size to defend the bigger off guards in the league. Williams is the more versatile player whereas Morrow is a shooter, which the Nets need. After finishing last in shooting last year, the Nets made finding marksmen a priority. There aren’t many better than Morrow, a third-year swingman acquired in sign-and-trade from Golden State. Morrow finished fifth in three-point accuracy last season (45.6 percent) after leading the NBA as a rookie, hitting on 46.7 percent from deep. With center Brook Lopez facing double teams, the Nets have someone who can make teams pay. Williams needs to improve his jumper but is good as a slasher, in transition and finding teammates for open shots.

2010 New Jersey Nets Small Forwards:

Missing out on James, and ultimately Rudy Gay, led the Nets to giving Outlaw a five-year, $35 million deal. Outlaw is an upgrade at small forward, where the Nets have used a platoon consisting of Trenton Hassell (59 starts), Bobby Simmons (46), Chris Douglas-Roberts (26), Jarvis Hayes (19), Williams (7) and Carter (7) since Richard Jefferson was traded in June 2008. Outlaw, 25, had his two best seasons in Portland when he averaged 13.0 points while playing 27.2 minutes from 2007-09. Outlaw also had a knack for knocking down big fourthquarter shots. He played just 34 games last season for the Blazers and Clippers because of a broken bone in his foot, but he’s fine now. The Nets have several small forward options, including versatile point-forward type Williams, Morrow and Texas rookie Damion James. The Nets traded picks 27 and 31 to Atlanta for the No. 24 choice James’ draft rights. They liked James’ toughness, readiness and aggressiveness and never thought he would fall past 14.

2010 New Jersey Nets Power Forwards:

The Nets see rookie Derrick Favors as the future and are excited about him and Lopez forming a formidable front line for years. The third overall pick, Favors has all the tools to be an impact player eventually. He’s 6-foot-10 with a tremendous reach, athletic and only 19. Johnson said if Favors bulks up, he could be similar to Dwight Howard with the combination of power and finesse. But the Nets weren’t planning to make Favors the starting power forward opening night. Since he needs time, they traded for veteran Troy Murphy. Murphy will help mentor Favors and with his ability to stretch the defense and control the boards will take some pressure off of Lopez. In his last two seasons with Indiana, Murphy averaged 14.4 points, 11.0 rebounds and shot 42 percent from three. He’s a New Jersey native in a contract year. He’s excited about coming home and primed for a big season. The Nets also have serviceable veteran Kris Humphries. After being acquired from Dallas in-season, Humphries displayed toughness and averaged 6.4 rebounds in 20.4 minutes. The Nets signed oft-injured Sean May, who has played just 61 games over the past three seasons and is a long shot to make the team, to a non-guaranteed deal.

2010 New Jersey Nets Centers:

The Nets have one of the NBA’s best big men, and he’s only 22 years old. Last year, Lopez averaged 18.8 points setting a Nets’ record for a center – and only took 13.8 shots per game. He also grabbed 8.6 rebounds and blocked 1.70 shots. He should get more touches under Johnson, who knows about playing with dominant big men. He won a title with David Robinson and Tim Duncan in San Antonio. Lopez still has to learn to be more aggressive, demand the ball and try to control games with his defense and rebounding. But they should come because of his work ethic and desire to succeed. Plus Johnson will try and bring it out of him. After a bout with mononucleosis left him 25 pounds lighter, Lopez played for Team USA in the World Championships. The Nets could use Favors to play some backup center and signed Petro to help Lopez.

I think the Nets will have potential down the road and who knows, they could even get Carmelo Anthony and really turn around their season. I just don’t think they have the players right now to finish above the Sixers. Avery Johnson will certainly help this team but he doesn’t have a Dirk on this Nets team.
