With a record of 41 wins and 14 losses record, the Heat is sat on the first place in the Eastern Conference, six games ahead of their most immediate contender, the Indiana Pacers (36-21), and with less that 30 games in the regular season schedule, no other squad in the NBA seems strong enough to stop them.
After a loss to the Indiana Pacers on February 1st (89-102), the team led by NBA All Star Lebron James, capped the month of February with 5 wins on the road and seven victories at American Airlines Arena.
In addition, the team has improved its numbers compared to last season. In last season’s shortened campaign, the Heat was 39-15 after 54 games played. Miami is currently 40-14 with the same number of games played.
Back in 20111, the Heat reached its best start in franchise with 19 wins and 6 losses. This year, the team improved their previous record by one victory (20-6). Also, the longest winning streak achieved last season was 9 games. Just in February, the Heat has won 12 consecutive games, the longest winning streak of the season and the second longest streak in franchise history.
Led by Chris Bosh, Lebron James and Dwayne Wade, the Heat’s offense is the key behind Miami’s recent dominance. The Heat’s offense reached the 100-point mark in 10 of 13 games and shot a collective 52% for the month.
Over the last four weeks, Miami has completely dismantled its rivals, winning eight out of ten matches by at least 10 points, including victories over two of the top three teams in the West Conference (Thunder and Clippers). Right after the 2013 NBA All-Star break. Then, they picked right up after the break to beat the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers on the road before two close wins against Cleveland and Sacramento.
In its latest match, the Heat defeated the Sacramento Kings 141-129 in a double Over Time. The 141 points tied the franchise scoring record. The game also marked Miami’s first double-overtime game at home and second overall. James closed the night with 40 points, eight rebounds and a career-high 16 assists. Thanks to his impressive numbers, “King” James became the first player in the NBA to finish with at least 40 points and 16 assists since 1994 when Kevin Johnson, now the mayor of Sacramento, scored 42 points and 17 for Phoenix against Denver.
Dwayne Wade had 39 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Ray Allen contributed with 21 points, Chris Bosh finished with 15 and Chris Andersen had 10 for the Heat.
While we will have to wait until the 2013 Championship to see if the team can claim it second straight title, so far the team has proved they are able to improve the record achieved by the squad that won the NBA championship last season and that they deserve a spot in the history books.
