Last meeting: First meeting of the season
Great matchup between two teams in the west off to great start. Dallas is enjoying success as one of the better defensive teams in the league (3rd in points allowed). Tyson Chandler has been a real solid addition forcing teams to make adjustments on their way to the hoop. Still this is Dirk Nowitzki’s team and even though his scoring is down slightly I am sure he is happy to be on one of the better teams again. The Mavs are on a real hot streak with 7 wins in a row heading into this one including road victories over San Antonio and Oklahoma City. They are just a hair behind the Spurs in the Southwest Division and are playing better than expected even though C Brendan Haywood is grumbling about playing time.
The Jazz are also riding a 7 game win streak so something will have to give in this one. Utah is always tough at home although they have already lost three games in Salt Lake City this season. Sometimes that is a season worth. Key for the Jazz has been the play of Paul Millsap. The Jazz brass were right to let Carlos Boozer walk knowing they had the talent to replace him. Millsap and the offseason acquisition of Al Jefferson form one of the best and bulkiest post presences in the league. Both rebound well and shoot a high percentage. Also look for Deron Williams to take advantage of Jason Kidd. Kidd is aging gracefully but Williams has become one of the best PGs in the game.
The current line on this one is Jazz -3. At home this should be a snap.
Prediction: A winning streak will stop on Friday night after a hard fought game. Look for the Jazz inside game to be a bit too much and for Williams to get off to a big game as well. Dallas won’t quit and has an advantage on the wing with Caron Butler but it won’t be enough. The Jazz will continue their winning ways. They haven’t lost to the Mavs at home since 2007.
