After a less than stellar December the Lakers have picked it up a notch winning 8 of ten in January so far.  They enter Big D off a solid victory over the upstart Thunder and are getting more and more consistent production from previously injured centre Andrew Bynum every time out.  He is coming off of back to back double-double performances and makes the Lakers one of the more intimidating teams up front in the league.  The Lakers are in a good spot right now.  Given their head start catching the Spurs might be a challenge but with Bynum back they are rounding into form and are ready for another championship run following the Black Mamba.  Nobody wants to face these guys, especially if you are struggling.

The Mavs are in their worst stretch of the season losing six in a row and 8 of 10.  Dirk Nowitzki is back but they have lost small forward Caron Butler for the season and ace defensive player Tyson Chandler is questionable for this one making them even more shorthanded where they can least afford it, up front.  Dallas needs to stop the bleeding soon as their hot start is becoming a distant memory.  They have been on the road for the last 4 of their losses so a trip back home is probably what they need even if the opponent is a challenging one in the Lakers.  This team just doesn’t have many answers right now and is even really short handed due to injuries.  They are likely to lose a couple more until they visit New Jersey on Saturday.

The current line on this one is Lakers -3.  Grab this one quickly as it can only go up as we approach game time.

Prediction: The way the Lakers are grooving and the way the Mavs aren’t means this one could be over by halftime.  Lakers should win by double digits if they put forth a good effort.
